Who eat all the pies? Well, this steak & kidney pie has travelled from UK to KL to Singapore and has escaped consumption .... it is intent on staying that way & has hitched a ride with Clare & Simon on their travels through Asia on their year off ..... but will it survive not being eaten by it's guardians? You'll have to read the travel blog to find out.....

After China’s endless claims of OLDEST, LONGEST, BEST PRESERVED, at various tourist sites, it is a great feeling to be in the world’s BIGGEST democracy. This does have occasional drawbacks, most often when trying to get something done: the downside of a bit of healthy democracy is that everyone has his or her own opinion about how things should be done …. So it takes that bit longer to actually do it. At times Clare possibly sounded like a raving NIKE fan, ‘just do it!’ I know from your feedback about previous blog entries (thanks for being honest!) that most of you are far too busy to read the detailed insights of our travels, so I keep it brief this time (this also helps me as I my former high speed typing ability has diminished ... read more

Oh.. the rigours of travelling has meant that the pie has not gone unscathed in the last few months, but is still intact & very much enjoying notching up miles on the piedometer... Hello all …… a VERY happy new year to you. Sorry this blog entry has been a while in coming. Anyway, hope you enjoy these snapshots of the trip over the last few months. Leaving Xiahe (last point of blogging!) by firstly, the SMALLEST taxi in the world into which we squeezed our rucksacks and ourselves wrapped in ... read more

Time to put our Mandarin lessons into practise! First, and possibly the biggest challenge travelling in China is obtaining a ticket to get to your next destination. Trains are often full & you can spend days waiting for tickets ... if you're English & have been brought up to queue properly. When in a Chinese railway station the trick is to forget any etiquette you have ever been taught & find a way to push in the queue/mass of people, as close to the front as you can. Ticket counters are sometimes quite entertaining places as it's the scene of much angst & melodramatics, but once you are ... read more

Hi All, Simon, Clare & the pie have enjoyed a few weeks in Singapore by way of a start to the travels. We are not really quite into full 'backpacker' mode quite yet as we have been staying with Jon & Kat in Singapore. Thanks to them for turning their home into a commune, and providing us access to comfort, full fridge, pool, wifi, luxury & a great time spent with them! The luxury is about to come to an end. Mandarin lessons finished this week.... so we're off to China next week! It was a little bit scary going back into the classroom after so many years, and it's been really hard work concentrating for 3 hours every day, but it's been great learning something new and we have really enjoyed the classes. The school ... read more
