Tuesday 5th September Laura - First of all, Happy Birthday to big bro, aka pompom, aka Thomas!! Hope you had a nice day. We had an early start today to catch our bus to Singapore. We were up before dawn. Frequent readers will know this doesn't agree too well with us! Anyway, bus caught, we arrived into Singapore shortly after midday and made our way to a hostel in Bugis, Little India, recommended by Lara. We passed a few impressive looking mosques on the way. The hostel didn't quite meet up to our high expectations, with the woman on reception being very unhelpful and miserable, and the dorm cramped full of beds. But, we don't have long to explore Singapore so we reluctantly plonked our bags then headed out to explore. We took a walk around ... read more

Singapore, is great, we both really loved the place. Sure it may not be the toughest global destination and has flowers everywhere and is super clean but these are good things. There is great shopping and eating and we managed in a mere two days to visit the lovely gardens, Little India, Chinatown, Clark Quay, The Colonial District and the Zoo (which is fantastic!). It was the perfect place to finish our trip, buy a few last minute goodies and have a brief relax before the flying. We visited Chinatown and bought some 'replica' watches and made up for our materialism by visiting the museum there which is really good. In the evening we went down to Clark Quay which has recently been redone and is extremely cool, whith millions of restaurants and bars on the ... read more

Okay where was I? ah yes! well I had a bit of an unfortunate occurance on Saturday night, i was packing my rucksack for the next day, happily watching tv in my room (posh hostel) when 2 irish girls arrived, they were the same 2 nightmare girls that had been in my room back in Rarotonga, the ones who expected any men in their room to go away for half an hour whilst they got 'ready for bed' they moaned about EVERYTHING and said stupid things like 'oh we'll be sleeping in our clothes tonight, we wanted a female only dorm' how could I of been so unlucky? NOTE - apart from these 2 muppets, the irish I've met have been GRAND. anyways, good 8 hour flight to Singapore, on Singapore airlines, great entertainment, sipping wine, ... read more

29th Aug: 10hr plane ride to Singapore, met a girl from Ireland who had immigrated to NZ with her boy friend, watched 4 movies and the plane ride was over before I knew it. Was really easy to leave plan check out and go through customs couldn’t have taken more than 20min. from the airport I went straight to the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) which was conveniently right underneath and took it to little India where I was staying, met a couple from Germany and a local who pointed us in the right direction on which transfers to take and a whole $2 later I was there. The difficult part was walking the 2ish kms from the subway to the back packers with all my luggage and the humidity and heat! After checking in I was ... read more

Update from Zoe Ubud was lovely far more chilled out than Kuta. As Dan said it's the art capital of Bali and each of the surrounding villages is dedicated to a particular art, for example there is a town for silver craft, wood carving, painting etc and in the village there will then be 20 of such like shops, quite a funny thing to see when you are driving about. The second evening there, we watched a balinese dance show, which i can definitely say is unlike anything else i've seen before! About 80 men sat around a fire lamp provided the vocal music for the dancers. The brightly dressed dancers told a love story - i didn't really understand what was going on, but it was certainly entertaining. We also saw some of Bali's countryside ... read more

Today began earlier than expected as we both woke up around 5:00 a.m. Ah, jet lag. After our first breakfast downstairs, which featured everything from miso and rice to pancakes and syrup, we headed out towards the Raffles Hotel. On our way we passed, conservatively, 250 separate shopping malls. It turns out that the cultural pasttime of Singaporeans is shopping, or at least hanging out in malls. Who would have guessed of a strong affinity between the locals here and people in New Jersey? The good news is that the malls are incredibly nice, and more importantly, air-conditioned. The seasons here, the saying goes, are hot, hot, hotter, and rainy, so indoor activities are at a premium. The malls also have a food court, but with fare many notches above Panda Express. Food ranges from hamburgers ... read more

Welcome! Of course we don't want to discourage anybody from coming to Singapore to visit (you are all welcome!). Suffice it to say, it takes a few hours to get here. 26 to be precise, including a stopover in London. We caught up on all of our "B" movies--"Mission Impossible III", "Friends with Money"--ate lots of airline food (the lamb wasn't too bad), and got to check out firsthand how messed up Heathrow is these days (very). To give you an idea of how goofy air travel is: you are not allowed to carry a bag larger than a small briefcase, and it must not contain any gels, liquids, or cosmetics, since ostensibly they might be used as incendiary devices on the plane. You may, however, bring safety matches, and any duty free you purchase in ... read more

The hostel Betel Box is great, really relaxed, all the staff are great, people friendly, my only wounder is My bunk is about 3 foot from the air conditioning unit and I have to sleep fully clothed! Well, I truly didn't believe I would find one here...but at long last, here is a picture of the toilet everyone enjoyed so much in China. I had just finished explaining to Nicole what it looked like, and sure enough we went to the bathroom at lunch and there one was. However, this one is much cleaner and you'll notice it flushes--that wasn't always the case in China. We only have two days left on our trip and plan to pack in as much as possible. I don't have as many photos here because the main attraction seems to be food. It is all so varied and so good; it is very difficult to sample it all, but we are working on it. And Meagan, you'll be happy to know that we are fully converted Indian ... read more
