Singapore Sling is the name of a Singapore cocktail - not that it matters, it just sounded like a good title. Welcome to Singapore PeterPopper. Thank you please. Singapore is a country, a city and an island... nice! I had heard on the grape vine about a cool backpackers place called Sleepy Sams so I booked in advance. Compared to most places in Asia Singapore is pretty expensive. Although I've been travelling for quite a while now this was the first time I would be sleeping in a dorm room. Time to dig out the ear plugs! Sleepy Sams is a really nice backpacker place - immaculately clean, nice decor, amazing bathrooms, free breakfast all day long, cool people, great building, top location. Enuf said.. Its just mint. On arrival I didn't really have much time ... read more

Well......took a while getting here......8 hours on a plane....not the nicest way to spend an evening! However, the atmosphere, weather and city itself made up for that when we got here!! Its a lovely welcoming, organised-yet bustling city, that is a good few degrees cooler than Dubai (Thankfully!!) and seems to have very much up-and-come. Came straight in from the Airport and found the Hostel no problems.....and although not quite as palatial as the last stopover it's not too bad....It will certainly do us for a few nights. Although we are expecting to be here a little bit longer as we have decided that waiting around in Bangkok, anytime in the near future, for any reason at ALL probably isn't the best plan. So we are going to get our Chinese Visas here instead. Should give ... read more

Yesterday was pretty much a transit day, didn’t get a great deal of sleep on the plane. We arrived in Singapore around 0800, with the outside temp of 27 degrees, trust us, it hits you when there’s no air con!! We got the transfer to the hotel with another couple who were from Norfolk (England) on there honeymoon (got married on Saturday), and her parents had paid for them to stay at the Shangri-La hotel. Not sure for how long, but talk about generous!! Then they come to Oz with Melbourne, Sydney, Queensland and Dunk Island on their agenda. Not bad for a 4-week honeymoon!! When we got to the hotel, the room wasn’t ready, not fussed as it was only 0930, so we headed along Orchard Road, the main shopping street.; Naturally, there’s Cartier, Prada, ... read more

These are a few of the pics that I took at the Singapore Zoo which good old Steve Crickey Irwin helped design. It was pretty cool, I hung out with some Poms there for a couple of hours before having to make my way to the airport.... read more

This might turn out to be a bit of a history lesson but bear with me because I think it's interesting and kind of explains very well British colonisation in general in Asia and why Singapore is the way it is now (please don't yawn!). Using what I remember of parts 1 to 3 of the Discovery Channel's history of Singapore shown on the plane and a smattering of the Lonely Planet I shall begin... Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, a young employee of the East India Company (EIC) landed his ship on a small jungle-covered island at the southern tip of the Malay peninsular in 1819. Did a dodgey deal with the Sultan of Malay's brother which meant the Sultan's bro received a substantial payment so that in return the EIC had pretty much the right ... read more

The tour reached its final destination of China Town in Singapore on Saturday where everyone left to go their separate ways. We spent the last few days checking out KL, Melaka for one night and finally a farewell dinner and night out in Singapore. It was a rather hectic schedule as we were moving pretty quickly through these last few cities. Despite that, good times were had and it's strange that it is all over now. Only one more week to go and we will be back in the UK. We had a few extra nights here in Singapore and I'm sure Jess has already mentioned this. It's such a beautiful place and definately worth seeing. So the final leg of our journey brings us to Hong Kong - my home turf. We will be spending ... read more

Hey it's Alison here, thought I should write another entry as I've been leaving it all to Jess and Amy. We're in Singapore at the moment but flying to Hong kong ridiculously early tomorrow morning. Singapore is really nice , it's definitely my favourite city that we've visited so far, it's much cleaner and more modern that the others. We've only been here two days but have managed to fit quite alot in, we've seen China town, Little India, the main sites in the centre of the city and visited Singapore Zoo today which was fun. But the highlight here so far had to be the cocktail bar that we went to last night on the 71st floor of the tallest hotel in Asia, the views were amazing and to make it even better they had ... read more

When I said I'd add another blog if something equally dramatic and exciting happened, that wasn't an open invitation!! So we go for a walk by a reservoir, where there's some of the only rainforest left in Singapore, and apparently you can see turtles, monitor lizards, monkeys... Well, it started raining pretty heavy, and then a storm broke. Thunder and lightning everywhere. At this point, let me just say, I was always told that lightning takes the shortest route to earth. So being surrounded by trees, you'd expect there to be plenty of targets. Well, if anyone tells you the same thing, DON'T BELIEVE THEM!!! About 70 metres ahead of us a bolt of lightning struck the ground on the path we were walking on, completely ignoring the numerous tree options available. And if not a ... read more

Hey, so it's last stop on the 'world tour'. Hasn't it gone fast?! Less than 2 weeks and I'll be back in blighty. Well, I'm enjoying Singapore so far. Really great to see Simon (and Mia too, who's here til tomorrow). Just been taking things easy so far, chilling by the pool, playing a little tennis, eating chilli crab.... Went out last night to Ministry of Sound. Wasn't really what the name would lead you to hope. Lots of really cheesy music. So I made my own entertainment. In this obsesively tidy and ordered place, if you put your drink down on a table, it's usually only a matter of moments before a member of staff will come and move it onto a placemat for you. Obviously, being a messy bugger, I found this both bizarre, ... read more
