I’m a little embarrassed that I don’t know more about Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, considering I keep bumping into him on my travels. Well, not literally, (the guy’s been dead for more than 90 years) but I’ve seen statues and memorials to him in San Francisco, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, to name a few places. And I came across one more in Singapore, on my way to the Burmese Buddhist temple. I really didn’t know much about Dr. Sun. I had this vague idea that he was involved with Taiwan, (ROC, Republic of China) and that he was a revolutionary bent on overthrowing the Qing Dynasty. To foster democracy, he founded the Chinese Nationalist Part – the Kuomintang – or maybe he was a communist. Or both! And maybe he had hand in the triads, the Chinese ... read more

If you have been following along, you know that I like Singapore. I like Singapore a lot, to the point where I’ve visited Singapore just about every year since 2007. Over time, I’ve developed a bit of a routine: the first morning in Singapore I usually walk down South Bridge Road past the mosque and the Hindu temple, to Nanyang Old Coffee, for an iced coffee and a slice of pandan cake. Then I skip to the next block and visit the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, where I drop a few coins into the offering box in front of the Buddha dedicated to my birth day. I’ll wander through the little stalls that line Sago Street, and stop into the Chinatown Visitor Centre. At some point during my stay I’ll walk along the river, visit Merlion ... read more

After a comfortable sleep we left the Hotel and made our way back to the MRT to catch a train to Marina Bay. The trip itself took approx. 20 minutes and with a 15 minute walk to the pier. Then the waiting began with security and then check-in. We waited approx. just over an hour and a half until we could board the ship. Looking around at the sea of guests Craig and I were the minority in terms of age. The Princess Sapphire is the biggest ship that we have been on to-date. The ship for the past 2 weeks had been on dry dock having some refurbishment. It is very well appointed and tastefully decorated. Our internal cabin was located on level 10 (Caribe Deck) and was pleasant with ample hanging and cupboard space. ... read more

We left Kolkata on our flight to Singapore. It was uneventful . After arriving at the airport we changed our Indian rupees for Singapore dollars and I was about to order coffees while we waited for our flight. Instead we were called to the Singapore Airlines desk. Our flight was overbooked and as we had a connecting flight in Sydney to Canberra they asked us if we would like to be moved to the direct flight leaving later that night. The compensation would be an upgrade from Premium Economy to Business, access to the Business Lounge, accommodation and meals at the Crowne Plaza airport hotel for the day. We decided to say yes as we had been awake for over 24 hours ( not counting small naps on the plane). We also asked for our bags ... read more

Tuesday 6th February 2018 Awake at just after 7am feeling refreshed after yesterday’s marathon around Singapore. Just so much to see and do. Sarah went off to put the laundry in the machine.....leaves less to sort when we get home. Then it was showered and dressed and off out again. Today will be a day at Singapore Zoo.......we don’t usually visit a zoo but this one is world famous for the way it’s set up, the research they are involved in and the way the animals are treated and looked after. Firstly we called in at the money changers at Little India and then headed out of the city on the MRT to Ang Mo Kio, then it was hop onto the number 73 bus which takes you to the front door of the Zoo. Friday 2nd February 2018 Awake a little earlier today to finish off the packing and enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we head off to Da Nang airport for the next and final leg of our south east Asia adventure. We have loved our time in Hoi An on this our second visit. It’s a place that has so much to see and do with a beautiful old town, great countryside and a nice beach not far away. We will be sad to say goodbye to this special place. Also we will be sad to leave the Camellia Homesta, it’s been a perfect place for us. A family who really do care for their guests and want them to enjoy their hospitality. The rooms are big, facilities great and the breakfasts are huge with a great selection ... read more

Lovely Lion City Singapore, January 2018 Fun Factoid about Singapore: it’s nickname is "the fine country". That's because you get fined for lots of things like littering, feeding monkeys, spitting on the floor, sticking gum below the chair/table and more. Is this a great country or what? And don’t get me started on their draconian legal system…..these folks do not pussy-foot around. Time for me to head east and stick my tootsies once more into a fish tank…..yes, I did say fish tank. This city-state in southeast Asia is where I first experienced the dubious thrill of fish spas a few years ago, and I’m more than ready for new water sessions. More about this fun stuff later. First, it’s 3 flights across the Pacific via Seattle and Tokyo, before touching down at Changi ... read more

Today's plan was to use the hop on / hop off buses to get us round to where we wanted to go. We went to the bus stop as directed by the hotel only to find that it was the yellow route where we wanted the red route, which means we had to walk to another bus stop. The C.O. Is flawed. She cannot read a map. However she thinks she can. We had a free and frank exchange of views but I insisted that we went to where I said in order to catch the bus to Chinatown. We found out the correct stop, bought tickets and journeyed to Chinatown which was our planned destination. I tried to remain impartial and keep the smugness off my face. I am not sure I achieved this as, ... read more

I am sitting in Singapore Airport lounge, at 06:30 trying to catch up on my blogs and dawn is breaking. So here goes 14/1/18 It has stopped raining!! It looks like it may start again - very soon, but doesn't. We like to take river trips when we can as it puts things in place for us. Accordingly, we boarded a small pleasure craft endearingly called a bum boat and sailed along the Singapore river. There was a crew member who was quite entertaining. Singapore has 700 square kilometres of space for 5 1/2 million people who live on top of each other, literally, in high rise tower blocks. You can see a number of them from the river as well as a lot of office buildings. The residential tower blocks are those with washing hanging ... read more

Firstly, a big thankyou to everyone who read the last entry on the blog and a bigger thankyou still to those who added a comment or two - fortunately none of them fell into the 'offensive or rude' categories and were, therefore, automatically blocked by the site!! Now, that would have been something! So, let's move on to the next blog entry and with this in mind, many of you may know that Singapore was founded in 1819 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, a man already heavily involved in the British Empire's expansion into South East Asia, including into Malaysia and Java, Indonesia. However, before someone looks to get a petition together to tear down his statue in Westminster Abbey, it should be remembered that he was a fervent supporter of abolishing slavery and his name ... read more
