Singapore was founded as a British trading colony in 1819. It joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963 but separated two years later and became independent. It subsequently became one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe. I checked out of my hostel (Base Christchurch) and headed to the airport on friday (10th July). Unfortunately there was a problem refueling the plane which meant we were sat on the ground for 2 hours, before setting off over the amazing Southern Alps of New Zealand. The delay meant that I missed my connecting flight from Sydney to Singapore, I was rushed through Sydney airport by the nice lady from Qantas (felt like a VIP) and put on a plane to Brisbane. When I arrived in Brisbane the pilot informed us that the train between the domestic and international terminals [View Full Entry]

Welcome to the home of the Singapore Sling…Singapore! On our way to Bangkok we decided to stop off in Singapore for a few days to check out the city and its famous zoo. Arriving late at night we were relieved to find that the MRT ran until midnight, which was useful as we had to catch 3 separate trains to our hostel and luckily made the last train by 2 minutes. Even though it was 1am the first thing we noticed about Singapore was how humid it was, which didn’t help the 200 meter walk to our hostel. To get around [View Full Entry]

Hello! We have been in Singapore for 24 hours now and we love it! spent our first night in the 24 hour food court round the corner from us, it took us about 3 hours just to choose what to eat, I think Ricky was in his element especially when he saw the size of the Tiger beer the lady was bringing us. Our flight here was amazing we had every film I could think of in the last year plus some classics to choose from and Ricky spend the first 2 hours trying to hide the fact he was dieing [View Full Entry]

Week 2 so far Asia » Singapore
Okay, that last entry took me way too long to write, from now on I will be more concise lor. Work was much harder this week, alot of things to do, more stressful due to deadlines but nonetheless still lots of fun and an awesome experience. This week I registered for my Work pass, ate some Japanese food, some western food, did some mid-night martial arts training and met up with friends. I ate char kway tiao- which is so tasty on so many levels- but its so greasy. Also had hokkein for which the same applies. On wednesday I visited [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Singapore via luxury coach (and it sure was luxury...we're talking first class kind of thing for little more than a tenner). I didn't have much time here though as i had a plane to catch...so i explored the area where we were dropped off. It was a street full of shopping centres. We're talking at least 10 shopping centres spread out down one street. You could find anything here...but the only thing i treated myself to was a magazine, and a milkshake. Adventurous no? Getting to the airport was easy enough...and the airport was amazing. It was basically [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone, Well our work in India finally came to an end and we are currently on official holidays now. We are in Singapore at the minute and when we leave on Saturday we are going to Malaysia for 10 days. Our journey to Singapore was an interesting one as we found out at the airport in India that our plane was just about to take off as soon as we arrived at the airport, the time of the flight had been brought forward but they hadn’t informed us. However they soon got us onto another flight and we arrived in [View Full Entry]

Since i last wrote about Ko Samui we have been on the move a fair bit. The first step was to take a boat across to Koh Pha Ngan island, which is about a 30 min ride away from Samui. It is about 10 years behind Samui in terms of development but its nightlife and beaches are every bit as good. We were staying in Had Rin, which is the site of the famous full moon partys, so has one of the biggest beaches on the island. We went after the months party, so the island was very relaxed, meaning you [View Full Entry]

After the Perhentian Islands, we caught a sleeper train to Singapore which meant a 2 hour wait on Wakaf Baru station with literally no Malaysian Ringits to our name (there are no ATMs on the Perhentians), we were hoping that Singapore dollars were accepted on the train, as otherwise we would be going hungry without dinner or breakfast (this didn't seem promising as the man at the ticket office said that only Ringits were accepted!) When it arrived the train was great - we had a little bunk each with fresh white sheets, curtains, and a little window to outside. It [View Full Entry]

History unfolds itself at the Changi Chapel and Museum on Saturday morning. Delicated to the living memories of the many who suffered during the Second World War, this small scaled museum contained artefacts and haunting testimonies of the Japanese Occupation. 70 minutes from home and after 3 buses and 2 transfers brought me to the Museum grounds on the morning of 4th July 2009. Alighting from the same service 29 from Tampines Bus Interchange were a couple of caucasians with a common agenda. Sharing the same compound with the Changi Prison, the white-washed building was relatively barre [View Full Entry]

Voices from the past
The Changi Chapel

After running around Hawaii...finishing up the remodeling of the house, having our friend watch over the lil' ones/acting as our landlord, getting roommates to cover the mortgage, trying to sell our Mini, gathering up all the necessary admin details, selling off most of what we own (again), packing, etc...we have embarked on our world trip. Although it's not exactly how we planned, ya kinda just have to go with the flow and take up opportunities that arise. So, our first leg of the trip will have us anchored in Singapore and employed...well, at least one of us for now. July 1st, [View Full Entry]
