In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power. To be updated

Lost in the Himalaya Asia » Nepal » Himalayas
I've been back in Kathmandu for 2 days now, and you'll have to excuse my tardy update. After a week in the wilderness I was enjoying the comforts of a city.... semi-hot showers, bakeries, and shopping. Navin and Ranjit were kind enough to introduce me to their friend Siddhartha here in Kathmandu, and he was off on a trek in the Gimesh Himel region, and was kind enough to invite me along. I thought, why not? A non-touristy view of Nepal would be great! Little did I know that it would turn out to be one of the hardest things I've [View Full Entry]

Annapurna Circuit (Tatopani/end) Asia » Nepal
26/11/09 Once crossed the Kali Gandaki I was off the main bus road, and the climbing began, but it was expected! It should be the orange season as school kids frequently waited on the trail to sell their snacks(orange) to earned an extra few rupee, probably will spemd it on Hindu movie star's sticker I guess. The ascend was steady, after Ghara(@1700m) then onto Shikha(@1930m), the villagers were busy in harvesting, millet, potato, the valley was rich here with the low altitude, and there were quite a few mirjuana plants as a young man point out to me. All along the [View Full Entry]

After the brief stop back in Pokhara, I board a tourist bus for Chitwan National Park. Ever since seeing a wild tiger at Ranthambhore in India, I'd wanted a chance to experience the same thing again, so deciding to skip the Jim Corbett Reserve in Uttaranchal for the sake of a swift exit to Nepal, I booked myself in for a few safaris at Royal Chitwan, another bastion of the Royal Bengal Tiger despite recent poaching for Chinese medicine. However, knowing how difficult these animals are to spot, I didn't really hold out much hope of seeing one, so for me [View Full Entry]

Beth and I are in Kathmandu after a quite long plane journey. We left on Monday morning by catching the bus up to Sydney where we were met by Beth’s aunties, Sue and Reet. We had lunch at the airport, and after a long while we boarded the plane. We had got exit row seats which were great, and the a380 was a lot of fun in that it was such a big plane. Beth and I had vegetarian and Hindu meals respectively, which was rather excellent. We watched a few movies that we had neglected to go see at the [View Full Entry]

Zaverom :) Asia » Nepal » Annapurna » Annapurna Circuit
Ahojte, tak este sme ani poriadne nepopisali co a ako, ani sme fotky nepridali ziadne a uz tu mame zaver :) Dotrekovali sme aj doturistikovali a teraz sa vyvalujeme v slnecnej Pokhare a uzivame miestne kucharske umenie. A tiez trochu nakupujeme.

Day Six - Dovan to Deurali - 400 metres ascent Fairly easy day with only 4 hours walk to get further acclimatised and spend a night above 3,200 metres. We managed to arrive early at our destination to drink plenty of tea, do some washing (well Nat anyway), eat some dhat bhat and play some cards! Relaxing day before our push for the base camp the following morning... [View Full Entry]

Day 5 - Chomrong to Dovan - 420 metres descent , 955 metres ascent This was one of the hardest days trekking with a big descent into the valley and then a huge ascent back up the other side. It was made even harder with steps nearly the entire way making it even harder on the knees and legs... plus it was a balmy 17 degrees in the sun!! New Video just added... see the link below... We started our day at the unsociable hour of 5am to climb to Poon Hill (a steep ascent of around 400 metres) which we were assured would be worth the effort. It was freezing when we set off by torch light in the pitch black with hundreds of stars above us. Dan saw a shooting star and he wished we make it up and back in one piece. We slowly started to pass other groups who had left earlier as they stopped for a breather. Our competitive streak came out and we declined any breaks in the hope of getting to [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]
