In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power. To be updated

Our greeting as Pieter and I arrived in Pokhara
It's been a minute since I've written so I have to stretch my memory a tad to the days in Pokhara before I left for my trek through the Annapurna region of the Himalaya. After a sometime difficult experience in Kathmandu, Pokhara felt like the Nepal I had come here for. Hardly any honking taxi drivers, absolutely no rickshaws, few begging children, even fewer homeless children - it was a nice relief from the toils of larger Asian cities. With the beautiful backdrop of the Annapurnas and lakeside guesthouses, Pokhara seemed the place to be. We rented a paddle boat and [View Full Entry]

Well we've arrived safetly in Kathmandu last night. We are staying in the Summit Hotel. Its really lovely here very calm, We havent been outside the hotel yet just chilling by the pool today, we will brave the streets of Kathmandu tomorrow. Had an amazing time in Dubai. We arrived there on Monday . Went out on Gary's speed boat and drove around the beaches of Dubai. IT WAS ROASTING.... Very hot, a kind of hot that I have never expereinced before, the kind that I found it hard to breath in. The beaches were amazing white sand and blue sea. [View Full Entry]

Happy lady spinning wool.
She wasn't so happy when I didnt want to give her money so I caved in the end. I was worth it.
Nepal was a good break from India but it was during the rainy season so I didn't get to see much of the mountains. I crossed the border and booked a bus to Pokhara in hopes of doing some hiking on the Annapurna Range, it was there I met these 7 Indian guys who insisted on taking me with them in the bus they had rented. I tried to tell them I had bought a bus ticket but they would not give up. In the end they ripped up my bus ticket, having no other option I joined them on the [View Full Entry]

Doesburg to Kathmandu

Starting at the station in Arnhem (many thanks dad!), we boarded the nice smooth ICE train to Dusseldorf. Getting into he right carriage (No. 24) was no problem - finding seats 111 & 113 was! Try walking the train one end to the other with it travelling 152km/hr and with backpacks on your back!!! Just like Jan always says "You never get lost when you're with me, you just see a lot more!" I missed the seats first round and didn't bother looking at the seat numbers the second two rounds until Jan stopped at a pair of seats and said [View Full Entry]

First Impressions

 Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu
So I finally arrived in Kathmandu and I'm super excited to be here. I ended up being about 3 hours later than expected, but that wasn't much of a surprise. The last part of my journey wasn't too bad though because I was randomly upgraded to Executive Class so I was able to do 2 hours of waiting in the lounge, which was well equipped with couches and free food. Had some tasty cashew samosas and an hour long nap. The flight was pretty comfortable too so it was a nice way to end off the long trip. So here are [View Full Entry]

Worlds of Difference

Namaste! After the torturous flight length, I'm relieved that my feet are finally touching soil...well, dirt, garbage, and whatever else that may be on the ground here in Kathmandu. I arrived into Tribhuvan international airport last Wednesday around 6pm not knowing what to expect. I departed the plane onto the tarmac being one of only a handful of caucasions and was herded into the airport to begin the entrance process. The sight of my first Nepal experience is hard to describe. Minimal lighting, signs that didn't direct anything, lines that had no order, bathrooms with no working water a [View Full Entry]

On the road again

 Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu
Day 6 - Pokhara to Kathmandu After we had finished breakfast, we said goodbye to our Guide, who had been excellent, and who had done his best to give us an insight into both the Buddist and Hindu religion, and set off on the road back to Kathmandu. The journey back was no less arduous than the way there, as once again the roads were full of trucks (road kings), buses and mad motorcyclists, interspersed with the odd cow wandering in the middle of the road! It's all part of normal life in Nepal. We did have a brief interlude on [View Full Entry]

Sun Rise at Fish Tail Mountain
Sun Rise at Fish Tail Mountain
We had to get up at 4.30am
Day 5 - Pokhara Our day started once again with a very early start to view the sunrise over the snow covered mountains of the Annapurna range and in particular the fishtail mountain. Our bus took us part way up the hill to get the best view. Luckily the weather was perfect, and we were able to see daylight break and sun rise hit the tops of each of the snow covered peaks. All this was before breakfast! After breakfast, we went down to the lake, and a boatman punted us across the lake to the other side so we could [View Full Entry]

It's been a while since I wrote a blog... Not that I had nothing to say!!! The day I landed in Asia again, I had so much to say, but it's been a couple weeks now, and I probably forgot a lot of what I wanted to say. About being in the airport in Addis Ababa looking at all the different people from everywhere in the world except probably Canada, dressed in their traditional clothes. About being upgraded from economy class to business class between Ethopia and Delhi and enjoying it immensely. About having to pay extra for my heavy luggage [View Full Entry]
