In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power. To be updated

Having met up with Jan and Dan..the tandem cyclists....and I was sure that was the end of my wonderful coincidencental meetings. But on my last night in Kathmandu I went to a Thai restaurant...Yin and Yang....which was great!...but as I sat there Ian and Kristen from England who I had met several days earlier just before crossing the Pass...at the truly rustic/disgusting?..Jimi Lodge....walked in! Great fun as we got caught up and traded stories. I was reading a great book while doing the Annapurna Circuit....called "Annapurna" by Maurice Herzog. It was written in 1952 after he led the [View Full Entry]

I am in Chitwan, the rainforest part of Nepal! I had a full day activity with elephants. They are so fat and peaceful. They never cause any harm to others even though they are the biggest. I went to a jungle safari on the back of an elephant and we got so close to other animals because they weren’t afraid of the elephant. Deer and rhinos were just relaxing around us. Then I went elephant bathing with them in the river. The elephant was having so much fun taking a bath. Afterwards I went to an elephant breeding ground where [View Full Entry]

Hey Guys! I am in Kathmandu! I managed to give myself food posioning the day I got here, so this blog is slightly delayed. Silly me, I thought if my stomach could handle anything in China I could eat salad in Nepal. How wrong I was! Anyway all better now :-) So a recap of what has happened between Lhasa and here. After nearly two weeks in the car, 4 days in Lhasa was a welcome relief. The first 2 days were free days and I enjoyed sleeping in, taking hot showers and walking around the Bangkor area. The area is [View Full Entry]

The short flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara was great as we managed to get some amazing views of the Himalayas including Everest... see attached photos! Today we embark on an 11 day trek into the Annapurna Range. During the trek we will start in Nayapul and visit many different villages along the way to Annapurna Base Camp, which is 4,100 metres above sea level, before returning via a slightly different route. When booking our trek, instead of going with a fixed and rigid itinerary and large group, we went for a local company who organises tailored small treks. Choosing such a [View Full Entry]

Nepal Trip Starts... Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu
Just a quick post to say that we arrived in Nepal with no problems. We spent a couple of days in Kathmandu before flying to Pokhara to start our trek. We are in the second day and so far it has been amazing. Tomorrow morning we get up early (5am) to climb for views of the entire Annapurna range. So far we have survived the drop hole toilets, cold nights and having one shower every two days! We are currently at 2,800 metres, our final height will be 4,200 metres at Annapurna Base Camp... fingers crossed our legs and lungs hold [View Full Entry]

14/11/09 With the communist party, the Maoist on strike yesterday, many road had been block, by 5pm, a lot of road junctions in the old town had traffic accident, but obviously it was manually made by men, every small street were jammed with people and cars, what a sight, think there would be more trouble and inconvenience in the capital, so after 3 days of rest in Kathmandu I better started my Annapurna trek today. Of course I had registered another TIMS card and brough the park ticket, 2000 rupee. And this time I recruited a pair of gloves into my [View Full Entry]

Pokhara Our trip to this city west of Kathmandu started when we surprisingly met the American couple we had befriended previously on the rafting trip in the street outside our hotel the night before we were going to leave. They were also considering visiting the place so we agreed to meet up the next morning at 8am to get a tourist bus (no trains in Nepal); nicer to travel with friends. However, 8am came and I knocked on their room's door only to find that they had changed their mind; they had read in their guide book that Tourist buses leave [View Full Entry]

4/11/09 Said goodbye to the yak troop and encountered with the donkey on the trail again after the junction to Lukla. There was far less tourist here, no more dress in best sunday sport and favourite doll on top of the backpack. in fact...almost all of them were porter carrying material into the mountain, I even saw many young looking faces carried those heavy load too, looked no more than 16 years old. Perhaps because of the Mani Rimdu festival were on schedule in the Himalaya, and they need more goods up there. Even the Tibetan market was fully open yesterday [View Full Entry]

Namaste from Nepal Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
I arrived in Nepal with a feeling of numb detachment. The sights, smells and salesmen of Kathmandu didn't move me as I had expected they would, and the rush of excitement that makes you sharply inhale, that tingling feeling of energy that I remembered from previous traveling experiences was missing. Embarking on a year long journey has proved very different to setting off for a few months. Leaving behind all the things I love and knowing that nothing will be the same when I return is possibly the hardest thing I have ever done, and my body and heart felt in [View Full Entry]

Arriving in Nepal from India was a turning point of my trip. Despite crossing the border on foot in the dark and spending the night in a mosquito-plagued dorm next to a snoring Spaniard (who was an entertaining guitar player mind), the bus ride from Belahiya to Pokhara was filled with amazing views, pretty villages and smiling locals. The sun was shining, the mountains were in sight and I was finally out of India, and so happy to be out! We reached Pokhara late in the afternoon, but long before getting there we clocked our first sight of the mountain that [View Full Entry]
