In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. A Maoist insurgency, launched in 1996, has gained traction and is threatening to bring down the regime, especially after a negotiated cease-fire between the Maoists and government forces broke down in August 2003. In 2001, the crown prince massacred ten members of the royal family, including the king and queen, and then took his own life. In October 2002, the new king dismissed the prime minister and his cabinet for "incompetence" after they dissolved the parliament and were subsequently unable to hold elections because of the ongoing insurgency. While stopping short of reestablishing parliament, the king in June 2004 reinstated the most recently elected prime minister who formed a four-party coalition government, which the king subsequently tasked with paving the way for elections to be held in spring of 2005. Citing dissatisfaction with the government's lack of progress in addressing the Maoist insurgency, the king in February 2005 dissolved the government and assumed power. To be updated

Swapping Books in Nepal by Aiden Asia » Nepal » Pokhara
It’s pretty strange because in Nepal they do book swapping. You hand in a book and you get some credit to buy another book at the shop. You still have to pay a bit of money for a book but it’s not too much. It’s hard to hand over a book that I’ve just read and really liked but I get to read more books!! We just did a really big trek up in the Himalayas. Annapurna Base Camp was awesome and the hot springs on the way down helped your legs feel good again! Tomorrow I’m going rafting with Dad! you don't have to look hard for a soccer game

So we sat around the rooftop cafe for the afternoon with a French girl Sophie and a Czech guy called Lada. They were not a couple but had hooked up to travel across the border into Nepal. Private buses only ran three times a week in the morning so doing this would mean staying another night in Varanasi. This would have been totally fine but we were itching to get on to Nepal, being the second country on our trip and were looking forward to something a bit different after 6 weeks in India. We decided to take one of the [View Full Entry]

I’ve spoken with a lot of people here in Kathmandu over the past week about music education opportunities for advanced western music, and I hear nothing but frustration from teachers, students, and administrators. First, quality western instruments are very hard to find, and even harder to afford. More importantly, though, there is a general lack of advanced western music teachers. Nepal has only one Ph.D. holder in music, and he is an incredible eastern classical musician. I know many students who are hungry to learn about western music; they’ve studied as much as they could o [View Full Entry]

Namaste from our 2nd capital city - Kathmandu. We wrapped up our tour of India on the 20th and had scheduled some well deserved down time, exploring the sights and sounds of Kathmandu. Unlike the picture that Lonely Planet paints of the city, it is quite a pleasant place to relax in. We were warned of the traffic and pollution but when compared to New Delhi it feels comparatively clean! We're staying in Thamel (ta-mel) which is the centre for tourists with resturants, shops, hotels and bazaars taking up every available space. It very much has the feeling of a small [View Full Entry]

The plan

I got some cool presents for my birthday. My favourite was the strawberry bubble gum. I nearly ate the whole roll in one day! I can blow little bubbles now! Mum and Dad and Aiden also gave me a singing bowl with an OM inside, a necklace which I’m wearing now, a chocolate hiking bar and a Tibetan bracelet. Everyone on the whole trail knew it was my birthday and gave me some sweets and sang me Happy Birthday songs! Mum ordered me a cake. Can you believe that?! A chocolate cake up in the mountains?! It was a really rich [View Full Entry]

Visiting Swayambodath. Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu » Swayambhunath
Back in Kathmandu, after a long and steamy hot shower. This buddhist temple, if very similar to Buddhanath in appearance, differs in far much more ways from others. It is not related to the temple being on top of a hill. It is in the decorum that completely surrounds the area. Gold painted statues, plainty of exvotos, far much more popular (so livelier, lovelier?) than the serious Buddhanath. [View Full Entry]

Kathmandu, Nepal Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu
We flew from Aurangabad to Delhi that afternoon so we could fly to Kathmandu the next day. I have to say we were disappointed with our hotel in Delhi. Someone had really not paid attention to the housekeeping details in our room. The sheets were dirty (had many dark chocolate stains), we didn't have enough towels or a bath mat in the bathroom. To top it all, there was a badly designed shoe storage area below the suitcase stand which kept falling down. At one point, it fell on my leg, my feet started swelling and I couldn't walk. This was [View Full Entry]

Annapurna trek, Nepal Asia » Nepal » Annapurna » Annapurna Circuit
When we told Rindi that some friends of ours had trekked the Himalayas, she was very excited. The trek was going to be the highlight of her visit to India and Nepal. She had a lot of ground to cover in India. So our trek was just 3 days. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it. We reached a maximum height of 2100 meters. Our route: Nayapul, Ghandrung, Landruk, Devrali and Phedi. We saw Annapurna south, Hinchuli and Fish tail on our trek. BTW, Rindi is ecstatic because she has discovered the secret after 62 years. The Trip to Kathmandu Asia » Nepal » Kathmandu
October 22 Well the days have blurred over the past 24 hours as I've travelled 13 hours to Tokyo (fortunately with a bulk head seat with full leg room) and then after a 2 hour stopover another 6 hours to Bangkok (again with an extra legroom seat) where I am now. Just waiting for my Thai Airways flight to Kathmandu...hoping to get some amazing views of the Himalayas including Everest! I can only comment on the taxis in Bangkok because that's about all I saw. I had a great woman driver on the way in to the hotel who happily flipped [View Full Entry]

We Summitted!!! Asia » Nepal » Himalayas
We Summitted!!! Yesterday at 8am we reached the summit of Island Peak. I must apologise for the lack of updates to the blog - there hasn't been any internet access since Namche over a week ago. What a week it's been though. I'll write a proper blog entry when I get back to Kathmandu but we've climbed Gokyo Ri and Kala Pattar for magnificent views of Everest + many other mountains, we've crossed two quite difficult high passes around 5,500m and of course we climbed to the summit of Island Peak. We left Island Peak base camp at 2.45am and reached [View Full Entry]
