Had breakfast across the street, packed, and checked out of the Mekong Guesthouse. Walked to the post office, bought stamps, and mailed the postcards. Got foot massages at The View Spa, overlooking the Mekong. Got our bags and a tuk-tuk at the Mekong Guesthouse and headed out to the airport. The flight was about 2 hours from LP to Bangkok in a turbo prop plane. Arrived in Bangkok and got a ride home in a taxi driven by a woman—a first for both of us. She was awesome and got us home in less than an hour during rush hour! ... read more

THAILAND Our second month in Asia started with a return trip to our least favourite place so far: Bangkok! We survived 3 more days, successfully saw the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, the Snake Farm, markets and Lumphini Park, (which is mental we arrived at 6pm where the whole park stands still for the national anthem! Then everyone runs or joins a free Tài C'hi, Yoga or Aerobics class.) After Bangkok we headed north to Chiang Mai an Awesome place made more special by Noland and Berm who own and run Santitham Guesthouse, the best accomodation we've had would recommend it a lot! In Chiang Mai I completed my level one Thai Massage Course, and Ben learnt to Moped like a Thai man! Additionally we saw the magnificent floral floats from the flower festival, got in ... read more

Had breakfast across the street and then over to the travel office to get picked up. We were driven about 2 blocks to the river and told to get on a boat. Slow boated down the Mekong for a while. Stopped at a village where they make textiles and homemade paper made from mulberry tree bark. Stopped at “Whiskey Village”, but didn’t see them making much whiskey and didn’t see much being sold. Back on the boat to Tamting Cave. Climbed a lot of stairs to get to the cave, which was full of old Buddha statues. Kind of cool, but kind of a let down. Back on the boat and high tailed it to LP to catch the minivan for the next leg of the tour. Grabbed some chips and waters and headed off. The ... read more

Arriving in Vientiane, the heat hit us like a blanket. We spent our first afternoon relaxing and planning the next step. That evening we were treated to a show like no other - a ful on fork lightning supreme with thunder like a million drummers and raindrops as big as houses (well Laos houses). We stood on the waterfront sheltering from the raining, mouths open in awe. It was wicked. Our second day we were off early to beat the heat, checking out the sights f the city including several uber busy and crazy morning markets, and the Patuxai, a replica of the Arc de Triomphe. Climbing to the top we could see out across the city, and could feel a slight breeze which was great. We then visited Laos' most important Golden Temple and several ... read more

Forgive the briefness of this entry but the service here is very expensive. Man I've been on the Island of Don Det for just shy of a week. It's really cool and laid back...no cars, no eletricity except for some generators that restaraunts use (so cold beer is always calling out your name). I have done nearly the same thing every day: Eating, swimming, eating, swimming, drinking beer, swimming, playing guitar, reading, and drinking beer. It's great. My mp3 player stopped working though so now I have no camera and no tunes. You know what that means? It's off to Bangkok, Thailand for me next. I can but stuff like that there. I'll write more from there. Should be less than a week! ... read more

Breakfast at Café Indochine, cheap and good. Lao coffee is so good! Looked for a nice hotel or guesthouse for our last night in LP. Best ones were booked so we decided to stay where we were at the Mekong. Booked an all day tour for the next day. Walked through the Hmong day market on Xiong Thong and then onto Wat That. On to Wat Aham and Wat Visoun (the “Watermelon Stupa”). Had lunch at Lao Lao Garden. Toured the Royal Palace Museum. Maxed out camera’s compact flash disc, so had to download pics onto CD. Nervous we might lose all of our pictures, but we didn’t. Bought a Lao men’s sarong for Todd, which is all he wears at home now! Looked for Navaingkham Market, but never found it. It started to rain, so ... read more

For such a small city Luang Prabang is full of things to do. We started our exploring there by renting bikes and riding around through the streets and along the the waterfronts. There are actually two waterfronts there because it is where the Mekong and another small river meet. As you can tell by my title, the monks in Luang Prabang really stood out. They are roaming around everywhere due to the dozens of Wats around Luang Prabang. Many of them are just still young boys and some spend a good portion of their day floating down the river in their robes. Many of them are eager to practice their English with the westerners coming through. We met a few people from our guest house and we took a mini truck up a bumpy gravel road ... read more

The Bus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng was great. Well the bus itself was kinda average but the scenery was fantastic - huge limestone karsts rising out of the mist and into the clouds above. We wove our way high into the hills, the villages of the lowlands slipping away into the distance, before we sped down the other side only to begin the climb again. It was absolutely mind-blowing. The soundtrack? A compilation of Corb's Led Zep faves including Misty Mountain Hop, and Kashmir. Perfect. Arriving in Vang Vieng we grabbed a super cheap but nonetheless comfy room just off the main room. The town itself is pretty small - mainly packed with guesthouses, bars, restaurants and travel agents - and jam packed with tourists. We spent a great few days here and wouldn't ... read more

Breakfast at Yong Khone restaurant, not so good. Changed some traveler’s checks at a bad exchange rate. Did the major wats in Old City, Wat Pa Houak, Wat Pa Phai, Wat Saen, Wat Xiang Thong. Spent a while exploring Phou Si (“Sacred Hill”), the hill in the center of LP. Saw the wats around the hill and That Chomsi on top of Phou Si. We climbed over 200 stairs. Had Lao pate sandwiches for lunch. Took a boat across the Mekong to Ban Xiang Men, a small village. When we fist walked into the village we saw a wat and decided to take a look. As we were walking onto the grounds and old monk motioned us over and unlocked the the main temple, or sim. We went in, took a look around, and came back ... read more

So to get from Hanoi to Vientiane, Laos, we had to take the bus. An interesting ride, it was... sure lived up to it's name of the "Hell Bus from Hanoi". Gah! The first few hours were fine... our friend Tanya was on the bus... cool. Then, we switched... in the middle of the night... to this crummy smelly bus, half packed with giant boxes and sealed bodybags of goodness knows what (the border-cross busses here have a bit of a reputation, so we hear, for smuggling illicit goods. excellent). We had to wake up a few Vietnamese folk in order to get a seat... random bags of vegetables and other things were evvverywhere. We (luckily) found seats together... it was a packkked ship! And then our journey began... very rickety bus, but it was, however, ... read more
