Ahhh, the sweet sounds of smooth Lao jazz. Sure, this music blocked out any possible music from our iPods during the 10 hour ride to Vientienne, but it also drowned out the sounds of all the Lao passengers getting carsick. While our weak stomachs can't handle their water or some of their food, their stomachs evidently get awfully queasy in motorized transportation. Fortunately, the bus company was prepared with lots of pink baggies and orange-scented air freshner. They were also ready with a guard armed with a semi-automatic. Only then did we read in our "Lonely Planet" that the road we were traversing is regularly visited by bandits. Sometimes, it's better not to know. Located between Thailand and Vietnam, two countries where everyone is trying to sell you something and "no" must be repeated 10 times ... read more

Hey this internet place sucks but I'm in Phonsavan (the H is silent) and had the most incredible day ever. I'll hopefully write more tomorrow and it will be a really friggin' long entry so bear with me. All is well. I'll hope to be making my way south to 4,000 islands (Si Phan Don) eventually. I may have to go to Thailand and pick up a new camera in Bangkok. It's horrible to not have one. Check back soon for details about today!... read more

We arrived in Luang Prabang yesterday after a (very!)slowboat ride taking around 7 hours from Pak Beng. After getting a hostel sorted we headed to a LaosIndian restaurant for some food by the river. Probably the best food i've had on the trip so far- i just got Chicken Tikka Massala but it was in a different sauce to back home and was just what the doctor ordered after the long bus ride. We ended up in a bar that was showing the Chelsea Barcelona game, all be it a day late and we already knew the score. Found out Liverpool got beat anorl-Ahhh! First impressions of Luang Prabang look promising, most backpackers in Laos pass through here and it seems so chilled out, the hostel shuts its doors at midnight though- so there shouldn't be ... read more

We bought two boats in Muang Ngoi and silenced our many critics by getting to Luang Phrabang alive and with the surviving boat in enough of one piece to still float with one person bailing full time. Friday, 24th February, 2006 I had a bit of a seedy start this morning, having been pressured into drinking vast quantities of Lao Lao, a highly toxic condensate made from rice wine that is best used for lighting fires or as an industrial cleaner. Jonas, the German, was in for buying a boat and got Barry, the Irishman in by asking him, "What are you going to tell your grandkids?" Three English lads, Fox, Steve, and Stuart, and two English girls, Hannah and Kerrie, also came aboard, so we went shopping for a couple of boats. The first boat ... read more

Chiang Mai, oh Chiang Mai. The cultural capital of Thailand and probably the best place we have been to so far. It was the base for the trekking as well as being a party filled city. In all I saw the sights, experienced the relaxing cafes, bought books from the local famous book shops, got drunk once or twice and saw Thai kickboxing (incluindg 2 knock outs). Overall a wicked city, with a brilliant atmosphere- there just arent enough superlatives to grace this wondrous location in the heart of South East Asia!!! Inevitably we had to move on though. Next destination: Laos! The past 3 days have been all about travelling. Our first port of call was the Laos border town of Huay Xia, where we had to get 2 buses, 2 taxis and a ferry ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang February 22nd 2006

Luang Prabang has been one of the best parts of the trip so far. I think this is the longest I've been in one place so far, and it's been really relaxing and enjoyable. Our Australian friends Sebastian and Elle left today, they were going to Bangkok and then London. So I'll miss those guys, we've been hanging out since we came to Laos. And on the bus from Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang I met Dennis from Edmonton. He's a really cool guy and it's been nice to have someone who can handle a little guy talk. He plays drums in a ska band called General Rudie, and a jazz band as well. I've been sharing a room with him and I'm sure the girls love having a room to themselves again. And tomorrow Dennis ... read more

After the relaxation of Ko Pha-Ngan and the easy touring of Bangkok, the past week has been the start of a neverending journey through the backwoods of Asia. The night of the 15th, we got on a bus to Chaing Mai. We had congratulated ourselves on shopping around and finding a bus for 200 baht, rather than 350. Then we got on it. The bus may have looked like the picture they showed - in 1985. Thankfully, we got the last two seats in the back, so we could feel the full effect of what no shocks will do over 13 hours. Boy, were we glad we saved that $7.50 six hours in. The upside is we got to see a movie starring Kadeem Hardison in Thai. That morning, we were poured from the bus into ... read more

Hey y'all, we left Chiang Mai on 21st: Felt quite sad to be leaving cos it is such a great place, so many happy memories, the people who ran the hostel were brilliant. We headed to the Thai border with Laos in the morning and a couple of busrides and a quick boat trip over the Mekong River later and we were in Laos, at a place called Huay Xai. We got our visas sorted in quick time, found a hostel and headed out for some food by the river. Huay Xai is a pretty small place and people only tend to stop there for 1 night and use it as a base to travel to other places around Laos. The old women who ran our guesthouse were pretty crazy, but friendly enough. We sampled our ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng February 21st 2006

Ok, so after Louang prabang, we went to a small place called Vang vieng which, again, was a chill out place! We went tubing (basically floating down the mekong river in rubber rings) and they had bars situated down the river and someone would stick out rope and pull you in...good times! it normally takes a few hrs but we managed to persuade some canadian guy to pull all 3 of us with his kayak...yes, he hated us by the end of the trip. this place was weird in that it played 'friends" in every cafe/bar u could see! at nightime, we ventured down to what's known as the "island", alls i can say is lots of drinking...lots and lots! ... read more

Valentine’s day! No girlfriend though I finally got my act together, had a stop pill, and headed out to the travel agency. Lecia (a Belgian girl full of fun) met me there and we joined about 8 others for the mini adventure of kayaking down the river. First stop was Tham Nam, a 500m long cave with a small stream flowing through it. We were equipped with headlamps nd tubes and directed to a ripe which disappeared up the river into the cave entrance, a wide gap in the rock rising barely a foot above the surface of the stream. Another group had joined us by this time, o we formed a line of about 20 tubes and 15 lights - there weren’t enough to go around - and headed into the darkness. After about 30 ... read more
