The 4000 islands is sort of a delta in the Mekong before it drops down about 50m along a long ledge of rock before becoming a river again. Don Det, where I spent most of my time, has sort of a laid back backpacker beach atmosphere surrounded by the astoundingly clear water of the Mekong. From Vientiane it took about 18 hours to get to the island, so I felt I deserved to lie down in a hammock reading books and drinking beer for the rest of the day. And the next day. And the day after that. On my fourth day in the 4000 islands I finally did something: I rented a bike the rode the 5km to the huge series of waterfalls that prevents boats going down the Mekong, and the French railway that ... read more

After the 2 day boat journey this town was a welcome stop. Luang Prabang is currently on the World Heritage list with UNESCO due to its high concentration of old temples and old town plan. This meant it was suprisingly built up and modern for such a poor country. There was also a big french influence here - old colonial buildings, baguettes etc... Just outside of the town is a huge waterfall where we spent a day swimming in the various pools and chilling with some beer laos... read more

We liked Laos immediately. It was great to arrive in Vientiane, a laidback, rather small capital city that is warmer than Lijiang, which was having unusually cold and rainy weather during our visit. Our first impression of Laos is how laidback it is. After our plane landed at the Vientiane airport, we noticed people walking across the airport and some locals were even sitting on the runway fixing a motorbike. You would never see something like that in the paranoid US. Vientiane reminded us a lot of Phnom Penh, with its colonial buildings and a similar layout on the riverfront. However, Laos feels more French than Cambodia, probably because the Khmer Rouge killed French speakers and anyone leftover from the French colonial era. There are a lot more French restaurants, much to our delight. The first ... read more

Standing on the platform with my safety line attached and my zip line thingey ready to go, I had thoghts in my mind. Maybe my dad was right, maybe you only get so many close calls in life. Maybe my nine lives are running out. Ahh what the hell just jump!!! Flying effortlessly over the forest for over 400 meteres I felt the cloest to free that I had in a really long time. I couldn't get a flight out of Chang Mai so I decided take a little detour and head to Huay Xai, Laos, to have "the gibbon experience." This is a project in Laos set up by a frenchman with a dream. Basically "Jeff" (who I never met) has set up a course of tree houses that are only reachable via ZIP ... read more

We spent our last day in Vang Vieng tubing down the river. It definitely gave us a new perspective on Vang Vieng because.... it was worthwhile! As we floated down, there were bars by the riverside and the workers there would hook onto our tubes and reel us in chanting Beer Lao, Beer Lao. At the riverside bars there were also huge rope swings that customers could use to jump into the river! It was a real great time but seeing as there is nothing else for people to do in Vang Vieng except drink happy shakes and watch Friends, we decided to head to Ventiane, the capital of Laos, the next day. There wasn't a whole lot to do in Ventiane except walk by the river and visit the fake Arc de Triomphe. After one ... read more

SABBAI DEE.....

Hi again, it seems like ages since we last blogged!!! We did say next time we will be in Laos. However, we’ve been to Laos for 12 days and now we’re back in Thailand (it is loads cheaper to use the internet here than in Laos) we wanted to tell you all about it in one foul swoop! Sabaidee!!! So, we left Bangkok on Monday 27th of February on the overnight train to Chiang Mai (again!) at 21:30hrs. We just sat in the seated fan cooled carriage this time instead of having an air-con sleeper cabin. It wasn’t a bad journey as we were asleep pretty quickly. We arrived on the 28th at 12:30hrs caught a Taxi straight to the Bus Station and boarded the 13:00hrs Bus to Chiang Khong. The bus was quite an experience ... read more

Hello agaiiiin! Our last few days in Vang Vieng were awesome... we had a hard time forcing ourselves to leave... the scenery was just so rad, and the atmosphere was great! Who says you have to watch "Friends" all day? We'd much rattther just lounge by the river... So, we inquired further about "WWOOFING"... (volunteering on the organic farm), but the situation there had changed, and that was no longer available, unless you had "special skills" dfor farming? Strange. So anyways, we ate there, and then decided to volunteer at the school, helping the teacher teach english for a few hours. So, Mr. T, the dude who ran the farm, drove us out to the mud-hut school lon a hill somewhere. As he dropped us off, we were told that the teacher, who was usually there, ... read more

Vang Vieng is a strange little town. I was planning on avoiding it entirely, but a stopover here breaks up the Vientiane- Luang Prabang bus ride (9 hours of whipping around hairpin turns through the mountains of north Laos) quite nicely. I knew I would hate Vang Vieng before I got here. Its one of those places, you either love it or hate it. I tried to keep an open mind- why did I have to act like an old man all the time? I could have fun with my peers. My dreadlocked, unshowered, Che Guevara shirt wearing, pseudo-intellectual hippie peers... I really don't hate Vang Vieng. It just makes me sad. A couple of years ago this town didn't have electricity, these days as you walk down the main street in town you pass by ... read more

Our first 2 days in Laos were spent traveling down the Mekong River from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang. We had heard great reviews of the "slow Boat" river trip and were looking forward to it. In the end though it was a bit of a letdown. The boat was seriously overcrowded and was more like a 18-30's holiday than a relaxing way to see the river. Huay Xai itself was a nice enough place to enter the country. It was pretty similar to other border towns and not a lot to do but had some great views over the river to Thailand. ... read more
