After a great time in Luang Prabang, I along with guy I had split a room with, headed south to Vang Vieng. We ended up taking a minivan and knew everybody in it, because they all had been on the slow boat. Seeing people I knew from the slow boat virtually everywhere was a trend that would continue all through Laos. As ever the journey was interesting, in that about halfway through we pulled off so the driver could check on a problem. One of the tires was wobbling and so the driver took the wheel apart to replace the ball bearings - not a repair I would normally make on the side of the roade in the mountains of Laos. As time progressed, the driver realized he didn't have the proper wrench and so flagged ... read more

Luang Prabang assuredly turned out to be worth the trip as it is a pleasant little colonial town with great views of the Mekong. My first full day I didn't do much but wander around the city, poking around various shops and (of course) visiting a couple of local wats. After perusing the night market and having dinner with some people I met on the slow boat I went to bed having enjoyed a laid back uneventful day. The next day another group of us from the slow boat hired a covered pickup truck to take us to a nearby national park reknown for its waterfalls. I was expecting a couple of small picturesque falls and maybe a meandering stream, plus the usual kitch for sale - turns out the park is a slice of paradise. ... read more

28th March Another early start as a tuk tuk is coming to pick us up at 8.30am to take us to the bus station for our minibus to Vang Vieng. In true Laos time fashion the tuk tuk turns up late. Nevertheless on goes our baggage and ourselves. The driver gets to the end of the road and then stops and gets out, chats to some guys for five minutes, and then sets off again. We then go round the corner to pick up some more travellers (Becks and Tim) who were some really nice Brits who are on a ten month honeymoon, backpacker style. It's only 5 more minutes before we have stopped again, and again the driver gets out, has a wander, does some business, chills out, then we are moving again. 5 more ... read more

Luang Prabang ... read more

LOG LADY’S CABIN - DAY MUSIC: CALL OF THE BLACK LODGE Seated at a dining table beside a tea set we see a woman, ‘LOG LADY’ MARGARET LANTERMEN. In her arms she carries a wooden log. She is speaking to us. LOG LADY As above, so below. The human being finds himself, or herself, in the middle. There is as much space outside the human, proportionately, as inside. Stars, moons and planets remind us of protons, neutrons and electrons. Is there a bigger being walking with all the stars within? Does our thinking affect what goes on outside us and what goes on inside us? I think it does. Where does creamed corn figure into ... read more

(Dave writes) After our last blog entry we got a bus to the border of Northern Thailand and Laos. We crossed the Mekong there and bought our visa before taking a two-day boat trip from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, with a stop for one night at a village on the way. The boat was packed with backpackers and quite cramped and uncomfortable (most people sit on tiny wooden benches), the scenery was great and we made a few friends on the way so overall it was enjoyable. Luang Prabang is the highlight of Laos for most travellers and we adored it. It's a town predomiantly composed of white French colonial architecture and green palms, with wats scattered around the town and plenty of nice restaurants. It was interesting to see the remnants of French rule ... read more

Okay... I really needed to put this in here. In one hour I leave for Hanoi. The BEST way to get there is to take a bus that takes 24 hours and is usually so full that they put little plastic stools down the aisles for people to sit on. There is no toilet, no food and most likely really loud, really bad music all night. And for this pleasure I get to pay $18. alternatives include a $135 flight or a series of buses that leave from "somewhere" for which I can't get a schedule and at any point along the way there may or may not be a bus and may or may not be a guesthouse. I am not pleased :(... read more

26th March After an early breakfast we catch a pick up truck to immigration for our first border crossing. You can actually see Laos from Thailand as it is simply opposite over the river. We get over to Laos on a boat and meet a Laotian at immigration who was filtering those on the speedboat and slow boat. Upon seeing our gleaming speedboat stickers he says “You doing speedboat? It’s an experience but you must be crazy”! We go through immigration and then congregate with, we are pleased to say, other people taking the speedboat. None of us know what to expect. The speedboat looks like a green, red and yellow striped torpedo. We cram nine people and everyone’s luggage into the boat. The boat is only about three feet wide and around fifteen to eighteen ... read more
