Well after 18 days I have finally made it over the Border into Laos, considering I was going to go straight to Laos first but that’s the best bit about no plans and no time limits. Cross 300mt of water and you really are in a different place to Thailand. The most important thing for me to remember is Laos has very few ATM facilities so I needed to cash up, and the the first stop was of course was Huay Xai, another little border crossing, very small and if your looking for night bizarre then forget it this place shuts down very early. But as I said before was invited to a party which was held out of town at a Very nice house, the best I’ve seen yet.. The guys who held the party ... read more

As I made my north through Thailand, I pondered the numerous travelers that had raved about Laos, and decided to change my itinary and push on to Laos. However, as Laos is not reknowed for its transportation infrastructure, leaving Chiang Mai by minivan was merely the beginning of a long trek to get to Luang Prabang in Laos. In Chiang Mai, I was picked up by a minivan, with the events immediately following leaving me with a certain sense of foreboding about the upcoming ride. Right after being picked up, the young women sitting next to me worked herself into quite an elaborate tantrum when the driver asked her to close the window in a way that wasn't polite enough for her tastes, however, the driver wasn't rude, he just spoke broken English. As I sat ... read more

I've finally managed to get myself out of Thailand... a little later than expected but when my Visa expired I decided it was a sign to move on. So I crossed into northern Laos and spent two days sitting on a boat floating down the Mekong River. The boat trip was much more a social experience than anything else and, though I'm still travelling with Karin (German girl), I've also met a bunch of other people that I keep running into as well as a Dutch guy and a Canadian guy who have joined up with Karin and I for the last several days. The boys saved us from a horrific guesthouse in PekBang (first night in Laos) and we've stuck with them ever since. Laos is a very interesting country if only for the mind ... read more

The journey from North to South went a lot quicker than planned. We stopped briefly in Vientiene, didn't think much of the city considering it was the capital, and made a dash for it south. We ended up here for a couple of days to check out the Ankor period ruins of Wat Phu Champasak. ... read more

Monday 20th February - Luanag Prabang to Vang Vieng Some of us get up at 5.30am to go into town and watch the local monks receive their alms. We took part ourselves and bought a big basket of freshly cooked sticky rice and place it into the bowls of each of the passing monks. They come through thick and fast and it seems hard not to sustain third degree burns - this stuff is bloody hot! After a breakfast of French baguettes and jam we get a jumbo back to our guesthouse and prepare to leave Luang Prabang, an amazing town that i would highly recommend anybody visits. After saying a sad fareware to Luang Prabang, we continued on the shocking potholed roads towards the fun town of Vang Vieng. The weather is still pretty warm ... read more

Hello my Furry Fans, What a painfully dramatic title, eh? Not to worry though, the insurance should cover it and, as you will see in the below it proved for some good comment fillers. Indeed, this blog is a little lacking in terms of my incredible comedic wit and is really just to update those that care. I'm sorry that i have'nt published a blog in so long, but regretably we've been in the sicks/traveling or some other problem that has prevented such a possibility. We have now finished our time in Thabom and have commenced our traveling. To conclude our time there was truly worthwhile because while it wasn't crazy partying we really saw a deep insight into North Eastern Thai culture. At this poist your probably thinking you've heard it all before, but not ... read more

Backpacker Central, Laos. We had heard great things about Vang Vieng (especially the tubing - more on that later) and were looking forward to getting there. However, the town itself we thought was pretty grim. Back to back guesthouses, all with a big screen TV and all showing continuous episodes of Friends for some stupid reason! Not exactly what we came to Laos for...... But luckily the town is set in some stunning scenery. Huge limestone cliffs, plenty of caves and a great stretch of river. Those who have been there will obviously know about the activity of choice, tubing!!! Bascially sitting on a big inflatable ring and floating down the river for the day, stopping every so often for a beer and a go on one of the many rope swings/zip lines that line the ... read more

I know, it's an awful title. Another very long one - but I guess you're used to this with me by now. I was contemplating making a new entry just for the hill-tribe trek, but thought I'd add it to this blog, hence the length. I've sort of drowned you in photos this time too. Everyone seems to like these blog photos, and with connections quite good out here, I'm sure you don't mind a little photo-drowning. Think of them as a gift for reading my blog. Of course, you could just scroll down and ignore the blog, but I know you wouldn't do that...would you? :) How would I describe Vang Vieng? A miniature, wild-west version of Khoa San Road would come close (and some joker even named the main street by this name). As ... read more

The Plain of Jars is named after the large stone "jars" that are scattered over the countryside. A bit of a Laos stonehenge, its not exactly clear what hey were used for. The area was heavily bombed by the US in the 60's & 70's and there is still loads of unexploded bombs found in the ground. The area around the jars had been partially cleared but we had to stick to the main footpaths. ... read more
