“The Javanese believe that the placenta is the twin child of a newborn,” Reni Fatmasari says, holding a clay pot delicately while examining its smooth sides. “It is for this reason that when a baby is born, the mother’s placenta is placed in a pot like this, then buried in front of the house for 35 days.” It’s early Tuesday afternoon and we’re in a roadside stall that sells flower offerings. We’re on our way to the Kasihan Spring just outside the center of Yogyakarta and Reni suggests we stop by the store first to buy flowers we can offer to the spirits that are said to reside in the spring’s premises. While waiting for the store owner – a 50-something woman – as she places our purchase in a paper bag, Reni clues me in ... read more

The Always Smoking Country is Indonesia, home to dozens of active volcanoes regularly spewing noxious ash clouds into the environment. Indonesia is also home to dozens of millions of men regularly spewing noxious ash clouds into the environment and it is this factor for which I give Indonesia its moniker. That's really one of the only few downsides to traveling in Indonesia which, with the exception of Bali and even there mostly Kuta, is practically devoid of travelers on the Banana Pancake Trail compared to other more crowded destinations such as Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. My second trip through Indonesia this year (first in Sumatra back in May and June) started in Pontianak, Kalimantan (a.k.a., Indonesian Borneo). I ended up bolting from Kalimantan 3 weeks ago much earlier than I planned and have since been chilling ... read more

Hello to all my followers, Today was a great day. We started our day going to a bird market, but they didn't just sell birds they sold lizards, owls, bats, genuine pigs, snakes (including a massive python and I'm talking big!) and monkeys. When I saw them selling monkeys I could not believe my eyes! It's so cruel. After the bird market we went to a restaurant called Via Via. We had a beautiful tasty lunch there it was great. Next door was a cool batique shop I got a few sovaniers from there. Then we caught a taxi back to our hotel for a swim and dinner. Thank you for reading my blog Zara... read more

I have been wanting to attend Vesak celebration at Borobudur temple for the longest time, so when a friend of mine Ella asked me to join her with a group of photographers to go to Yogya, without hesitation, I agreed. I had looked forward to the trip and had prepared my gear better this time. I have been to Yogyakarta ("Yogya") many times but this was the first time that I was there with a bunch of photographers. Just like many trips of mine, I hardly knew anyone other than my friend Ella and Taufan. Every single one of the participant is a professional photographer by my standard, except my friend Ella, Taufan and I who are the new comers in this world. I had left Singapore on Thursday evening on May 20th and stayed at ... read more

Hello everyone, Today we had an extremely busy day. Firstly we started our day with a buffet breakfast. It was bugus... which means good in english. Then we went to a old fort called Ferien burg fort (i think). It was a great history lesson and I actually learnt heaps. After that we went to our hotel and had a big swim and we had lunch at a restaurant my Granny and Grandpa recommended it was great. After that it took us 2 trips to the train station to book our tickets for Friday's train ride to Surabaya and 2 trips to a laundromat that kept on stuffing our orders up (unfortunately). Tomorrow we are going to Borobudr it should be great. One of our plans in Borobudr is to get a pony cart. For dinner ... read more

Hello to all my followers, I am sorry i have not been posting blogs we have been very busy and the wi-fi is not very good. Today we left from Jakarta and went on a 8 hour train trip to Yogyakarta. Jakarta was good apart from it being very dirty and very stinky.... So to me i probably would not go back there. Today we saw a little bit of Yogyakarta but it pretty much seems like Jakarta but smaller and less traffic. Also our hotel is great Ibis style it is a little comftable, snazzy hotel. The day before we arrived to Jakarta we went to the Singapore zoo we had been there before it took back memories but at the same time tested them. We had a very enjoyable day before our flight. Once ... read more

We fly straight to Yogyakarta, from what Lonely Planet tells me it is the main touristy spot in Java. We are not really bothered about too many beaches at moment knowing that there will be plenty of them on our trip. There is very different vibe to the city in comparison to the cities in Bali. Java is a Muslim country and this has a big effect on the general appearance and also my general appearance, no scantily clad dresses or shorts that show my butt cheeks anymore J I shall be conservative in order to fit in! They pray a few times a day through loud speakers, the first one being at about 5am and you can hear them everywhere. It’s pretty annoying. Our hostel is lovely, another homestay and again in a small tropical ... read more

Day 271 (Wed 5thJune) Another early start, which is not a favourite of mine, to head to the train station to move from Bandung to Yogyakarta. The trip took 8 hours although the train was pretty comfortable. I am suffering a trapped nerve though today which seems to have happened in my neck overnight. Considering I was on the left of the train it made looking out the window pretty tricky. Through a mixture of Ibuprofen and Tiger Balm I was able to see, which was good because the view is fantastic. The trains don’t go through tunnels here for the hills, instead going around them giving great views of the valleys and other hills which is lost going through a tunnel. I arrived in Yogyakarta around 3pm and wandered until I found somewhere to stay ... read more
