We are coming to the end of our month long visit to Indonesia and quickly approaching our 2nd anniversary of being on the road. We travelled throughout Mexico and Central America by car for the first year and a half, living in central cities for a month or two and visiting outlying areas often. We felt we were able to learn about culture, customs, cuisine and the history of the cities and countries we visited. It was challenging with language barriers and driving conditions but we found that by applying ourselves we were able to understand not only what things were, but why they were. We often struggled to define what our goal was in our travels. We found that foreigners came in 3 basic categories: expat, travelers and tourists. It was hard to define ourselves ... read more

Having decided on the country where we would spend the last remaining weeks of our trip, we were excited to get there but also apprehensive. Would it live up to our expectations and be the perfect ending that we were looking for? Or would we be disappointed? Well if the start of our time in Indonesia is anything to go by, we will end up wishing we had longer here... We rarely do things the easy way. Instead of booking a direct flight from Singapore to Yogyakarta, we tried to save a bit of money and booked an early flight which would connect in Jakarta with dubious airline, Lion Air. Leaving our hostel at 6.30am having had just a few hours sleep after a big night out was lovely as you can imagine, as was standing ... read more

After debating whether the Ramayana Ballet Purawisata would be better than other Ramayana performances in Prambanan or Bali, we decided to take a chance and attend the show. We had already completed our other agendas in Yogyakarta, so it was time to sit back and enjoy the show. The Ramayana Ballet is a renowned attraction for foreign visitors, and if you're looking for something to do in Yogyakarta at night, then this is the perfect choice. The performance tells the story of the love between Rama and Shinta, their loyalty and the brave act of Hanuman, all of which are important influences on Hindu life and culture. Although the show is quite long, it is a great way to learn about the teachings of ancient Hindus. The complex also houses a romantic garden restaurant (Gazebo) and ... read more

A perfect holiday allows one to simply do as one pleases. My first day here was one of those days. I slept in until 9, listening to the sounds of the birds. I enjoyed breakfast on my hotel's veranda and then set out to look for a journal and scarf. I walked down Malioboro Street and saw lots of purses, wallets, shoes, shirts, and skirts I would never wear. Block after block, and nothing I was looking for! Finally, I wandered into a mall and found a stationery store tucked in the back. I found a pretty notebook with a batik cover for about 1 USD which should work fine. After sipping on freshly squeezed orange juice, I failed to find a scarf, or at least one that isn't meant to be a Muslim head covering. ... read more

Das beinhaltet neben wunderbar tollen ... read more

Geo: -7.78, 110.37Today we flew to Yogyarkata or more simply Jogja. Here we were met by Ria, the RDC Director who lives here and lectures in Coach Education at the local University. He had flown in on an early flight himself. He drove us to our hotel which is very flash and comfortable, Then he took us out to lunch at a place called Parsley. This is a western/Asian bakery/restaurant.I had gnochhi and Fletcher had a pizza. After lunch, Ria had organised one of his students to be a driver for us. Ferdi collected us from the restaurant and drove us out to Prambanan. This is a temple complex dating from the 10th century. It is a series of Hindu temples dedicated to Siva, Vishnu and Brahma. It was very intact until 2006 when a 5.9 degree earthquake ... read more

Ok. Finally. I’ve managed to sit down to write about my week in Indonesia. I left EARLY Saturday morning with David, who was taking a flight to Japan. We said goodbye at the airport. Like GOODBYE (?) goodbye, because he isn’t coming back to Korea, but we might see each other in the future in China. So it went something like “See you around…maybe.” I headed to my gate where I ran into a bunch of friends who work at a different school. Just about every foreign teacher from their school was taking this morning flight to Kuala Lumpur, and then heading on to different locations. This included my friend, Sam, who I was travelling with and was currently planning on meeting up with in Kuala Lumpur. Being on the same flight makes that a heck ... read more
