Please forgive this unconventional, experimental and most likely unsuccessful way of blogging. Each caption refers to the pictures in order from top of page to bottom of page. I recommend that you read the caption, locate the picture, click on the picture, then click back on your browser and repeat for each picture that follows. Picture 1: Jalan Nokia 'Jalan' means 'street'. Whilst I don't actually know the name of this street, which is right next to our uni and sits in between the two homestays I've stayed at so far, I call it Jl. Nokia because it is absolutely dominated by tiny stalls selling anything and everything to do with mobile phones. The same goes for pretty much every street in Yogyakarta. I got in to Yogya this morning. After getting to the homestay and crashing out for a few hours I got up to go for a wander with Jared, the other Scotch teacher who's over here. Feeling hungry enough to eat a small grape (thanks to my stomach having shrunk due to gastro-induced anorexia) I ate some withered noodles infused with chewy "pork", flushed down with a tepid orange, tomato and carrot juice. My first meal in three days was a success - energy levels began to rise and diarrhoea levels remained at zero. After retiring for an afternoon reading session I rose at 3:45pm to clean my skin, which had been rendered silty by the dirty, humid air. I soon discovered that the water has only one setting - cold with a weak flow. I'm ... read more

We are sitting on the balcony of the Bedhot Resto at the moment, having a nice chilled Bintang and weird crisps (I want a package of Walkers Cheese&Onions crisps NOW!). We actually planned to have a massage tonight but as the girl who was meant to give me a massage was very busy with her blackberry there is no massage tonight. But first things first. The last entry ended with the wonderful train ride if I remember it right. Okay, so after 10 sweaty hours on a train we arrived in Yogyakarta (Jogja) and made our way to Sosro where all the guesthouses (losmen) are. We walked around for quite a while and saw loads of different places. A guy thought he'd do us a favour (and his wallet with the commission) by dragging us to ... read more

Of course, I will not forget that day, November 5, 2010. Merapi, one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia located in Yogyakarta Province and Central Java Province showed its "power" to the world. I was in Yogyakarta at that time and constantly heard the strong rumble voices since midnight. I thought Merapi was ready to erupt and it was precise. I came outside from the hostel I stayed inside Gadjah Mada University and amazingly (and scarily actually) for the first time in my life I saw and felt the rain of sands. It was not only ash rain that already happened several days before. Both ash and sand rain were the impact of the Merapi's activity. Then I started to turn on television and it had already been the headline news in all Indonesian TV ... read more

Day 15 - Yogyakarta We were up at a reasonable time on our first full day in Indonesia as we wanted to head down to the palace for what we had been promised would be a traditional Sunday morning dance ritual. However, after rushing down to the palace, all we could find were a gaggle of smiling tour guides ready to walk us round the temple and other points of interest in the vicinity. For the 30p per person it cost to get entry, the £4 for a 3 hour tour guide of the area didn't seem to much of a stretch - try getting a guide in the Vatican for such a small amount. We walked around the palace, learning about Indonesia's history, occupations and subsequent freedoms from Dutch and Japanese rule. The current Sultan ... read more

Up, shower, toast and out. Off to Changi Airport to make our first ever foray into the southern hemisphere. Whilst at the airport she decided to buy herelf a new watch and I decided that I really had to replace my sunglasses as the sun was starting to hurt my eyes. We English and the sun, a dangerously painful combination. Obviously the one pair that actually fit my head were the more expensive ones. This much shopping and we ended up being 2 of the last 3 people to board the aircraft. Something which vexed Elizabeth slightly. Flight was done and over with in just over 2 hours and, with a brief glimpse of Mount Merapi (the one that erupted in October 2010) through the clouds, we touched down in Yogyakarta. A $25 visa application awaited ... read more
