So, when you are quoted 8 hours drive that is definitely a “perfect world” quote and the road to Jogja is far from perfect. Bikes by the billions, narrow roads and totally insane truck drivers mean that in the end it will have taken us closer to 16 hours driving. The map system for TRAVELBLOG is not accurate enough for JAVA to really show you the route, so here it is: Drive across Bali (we started in Kuta) and catch the ferry to Java - then the trip begins in earnest. First we hit Banyuwangi and spent the night in Genteng (see article and pictures for Genteng) at the Asri Hotel. From Genteng we followed the main road west to Jember, Lumajeng and Malang where we stopped for the night. The hotel we stayed in ... read more

This is our second day at Yogyakarta after transiting from Jakarta... Let see what Parangtritis, the Most Popular Beach in Yogyakarta could install for us! The naming of the beach has its own history. Hundreds years ago, someone named Dipokusumo, who was a fugitive of Majapahit Kingdom, came to this area to meditate. When he saw water dripping from the crack of the coral reef, he named this area 'parangtritis', originating from the word parang (stone) and tumaritis (water drops). The beach close to the area was then named the same. The to Prambanan temple, An extraordinarily beautiful building constructed in the tenth century during the reigns of two kings namely Rakai Pikatan and Rakai Balitung. Soaring up to 47 meters (5 meters higher than Borobudur temple), the foundation of this temple has fulfilled the desire ... read more

The train ride from Bandung to Yogyakarta was long and uneventful, it was actually quite boring. What a difference to Indian trains! The train station area was blocked by heavy metal bars, so that people don’t linger around the tracks without a ticket or run across them, it was very effective, maybe people have to be forced into discipline a bit. The train left on time, was very clean for Asia, and everything was well organised, you could rent cushions and vendors were only allowed in at certain moments, in order not to allow too much competition to the official food and drinks sellers. Furthermore, this train was relatively empty, well we drove ‘bisniss’ class because 3rd class which local people mostly use, was not available. We arrived well in Yogyakarta, and also the pick-up service ... read more

There's so much more to experience on the Indonesian archipelago than just paying a visit to Bali. Australia's nearest neighbour to the north is home to 220 million people, and the world's largest archipelago has 1700 islands which span more than 5000 kilometres. Mind you, no visit to Indonesia is complete without stopping off in Bali, a beautiful island that holds a special place in my heart. When the flight arrived from Sydney I checked into the same Kuta hotel as previously, and enjoyed a few days relaxing with the smiling Balinese before setting off to explore Java and Sumatra. So then, it was time to embark on exciting new travel adventures... starting with a taxi ride to Denpasar and the bus terminal. I organised a bus ticket to Java and once again I was on ... read more
