ooh gosh i have a lot to get through in a very short amount of time. umm wednesday last week i visited this amazing islamic uni. ok ill try think of the most interesting things: ok well you know the general dude from last blog? seems i left quite an impression with him... on thurs last week we were outside his headquarters when he came out with all these guards with guns and serious looking men marching but he stopped to wave at me from across the yard. oh the reporters were so jealous because apparently they see him everyday and he never recognises them. then his funny reporter called tutus took me to the beach, black sand and deserted with huge waves. jeje takes me to the most amazing places for dinner. this one resturant ... read more

long and tedious showers with a few drops of water, eating chocolate cake for breakfast and remaing a lady while dismounting from a motobike... ive done three days at the tv station now. the trip there takes about 25 mins on the motobike, didik drives. i love going through the small villages. the scenery, people going about their lives and just the fact that every building is different, nothing matches, it all just looks as though its been dumped and the juxtaposition of US ads and quiet asian traiditon is just cool. its so odd here everyone talks about "white beatuy" and its advertised everywhere - rich people get michael jackson like injections of lighter pigmentations while all of us in the west die to be brown. ive been going out for dinner a lot - ... read more

ok well im here! yogya is perhaps not as idylic and peaceful as i expected... its loud and polluted and everything is 'under construction' but its very vibrant and theres always soemthing to see. its probably bigger than i thought it'd be too. mostly uni students as expected because the biggest uni in indo is here, gagah mada. my delayed flight from melb to KL meant that i arrived in kl at about 4am instead of 9pm the night before... soo the LUXURY hotel room i payed for was wasted as i slept on a couch, along with about 11 others. but that was alright. it was only for a few hours, as my flight to yogya was at 9.20am. so all went smoothly after that. i was bombarded at yogya airport by heat and papers. ... read more

We flew to Indonesia with lots of preconceptions of what the country would be like. These were based on government warnings about travel to Indonesia on the FCO website, which had us fearing that all Indonesians would be terrorists intent on kidnapping us or blowing us up, and western media portrayal of what 'muslim countries' are like. It turned out to be completely different to what we expected. The first suprise on landing was that, far from being a bunch of western-hating extremists, Indonesians are friendly, welcoming people. A guard took us straight past the immigration queue at the aiport and people would smile, shout hello, point us in the right direction and be generally helpful. On the train one lady even brought her children over to say hello and shake our hands. The second ... read more

We left Lovina the next day on another night bus, because the dolphins were seemingly the main attraction and their was very little else to do. The journey to probbolingo went smoothly and we arrived there at 3am!! their was only one place open to arrange our further transport to mount bromo and he did slightly rip us off but it equated to about 75p so we wern't to fussed.our transport was a small minivan with around 30 people either in it or on it for the 2 hour trip to bromo (luckily we were in the front where there was just 4 of us). At about 6am we arrived in cemero lawang (the gateway to bromo) and hunted out some accommodation before having breakfast and then going to bed. We both felt pretty rough from ... read more

We left India on 15th February, taking a night flight from Mumbai to Bangkok. Our last sight of India was the evening taxi journey from downtown Mumbai to the airport. The centre of Mumbai is a thriving international city with all the trappings of wealth and growth. As we got further from the centre the landscape changed. We drove through roads where makeshift homes had been erected on the street; sheets of tarpaulin spread across bamboo poles providing homes to whole families. Occasionally you could get a glimpse inside one of these homes, where surprisingly domestic life is maintained inches from the thundering traffic - clothes hung on makeshift clothes rails, people preparing an evening meal and, somewhat incongrously, gathered round a flickering tv screen. We were passing through one the slums of Mumbai, where people ... read more

but i certainly dont need indo...hehe. Im alive, in Yogyakarta (pronounced Jogja-karta). I got here yesterday, and after being away for almost 3 weeks, i got a sudden, slight pannik attack. I have came to a realization...i have never every been completly alone for this long, in my life. My days are spent mostly in solitude, reading a book, or daydreaming, mostly of my gorgeous girlfriend, who for some stubborn reason, i decided to leave behind. Not only am i alone, but nobody speaks my damn language. So i went to call her, to get her to calm me, and the skype (a computer program that uses headphones and a mic to talk for very cheap to phones all over the world) was being screwy...which made my pannik attack almost take over. A few deep breaths, ... read more

One of the things I love about Jogja is that everyone is an early riser! The local usually gets up at 5am or Subuh Prayer. By 6am breakfast stalls were full of patrons. And the best part is that the sun rises at 5.30am! Which means we get to do so much more in a day! I totally love it! Since I am an early riser myself hehe... I got up at 5am today and by 6am I was already looming at the streets with the locals and having breakfast at McDonalds! (a short note on Jogja's McD...their ayam goreng taste much better than our Spicy KFC! A MUST try!) After breakfast, I walked my way to the Kraton (city palace) to catch the Gamelan and Classical Dance performance. The 2km walk was extremely annoying. With ... read more
