So, on the morning of March 2nd we headed to the bus station with our tickets for the public bus to Nong Khiaw. The public bus turned out to be a large tuk tuk (sawngthaew). So, with almost 20 of us crammed into the back we set off on a dusty and cramped journey to Nong Khiaw. Four hours later we had arrived at the bus station in Nong Khiaw where we got a lift to the river for our boat ride up the river to Muang Ngoi Neau. Ngoi Neau is 25km upstream from Nong Khiaw. It's a small village perched on the banks of the river in a beautiful valley where the river winds its way through the limestone karst landscape. On our arrival we found a place to stay and I had to ... read more

It was finally time to leave Vang Vieng and the tubers behind. We booked ourselves onto a bus leaving at 11 am which gave us enough time to pack and order more delicious sandwiches for the journey through the mountains to Luang Prabang. The drive is scenic and would have been comfortable and enjoyable on the VIP bus if we had not had such an ignorant and selfish moron sitting in front of us. He had two seats to himself, acres of space in front of him to stretch out his legs and still insisted on reclining both seats despite being politely asked not to. The journey ended up being cramped and exhausting but we did arrive in Luang Prabang on time, early evening and still with plenty of light to find Sisombath Guesthouse recommended to ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng March 12th 2012

After a very bumpy minibus ride we arrived in Vang Vieng and found a nice place to stay straight away. Phouna Guesthouse - 50.000 Kip and 5 minutes walk to the centre. The first afternoon we hardly did anything apart from exploring VV a little and in the evening we had a nice dinner down by the river. Huge portions and very delicious! Nom nom nom! We had quite an early night so we are prepared for the tubing madness on the next day. We hired the tubes for 55.000 Kip and a Tuktuk drove us up the river. We got stuck at the first bar and had a whiskey shot and beer. After a while we floated on and I spotted a sign telling us they'd serve Chili Cheese Fries - for free! So I ... read more

We arrived at one of the bus station about 10 km from the centre and so we had to pay 20.000 Kip each to get into town. By now we started to discover that getting around in Laos was quite expensive. After the drive into town we walked around to find a place to stay but most places were either full or too expensive. We found a place for 60.000 Kip, a twin room on the top floor on a so-called guesthouse. The rooms were basically wooden boxed with cheap dirty beds and useless fans but it would have to do until we could search for somewhere else the next day. We were hungry by now so we went in search for some food. We found a small family restaurant and had some noodle soup and ... read more

Asia » Laos » South » Savannakhet March 12th 2012

On the 7th we decided that it's time to leave Vietnam so we booked a bus to Savannakhet, Laos on the 9th. As we were told we arrived at the travel agency at 7 am and 15 minutes later they brought us to the public bus station in Hue. The guy who brought us there took our passports to check us into the bus but it took quite a while and I had a gut feeling that something wasn't right and I was proved right (as always. haha) The guy told us the bus to Savannakhet is full and we should go on a bus to Pakse instead. From there on we would have two possibilities: either getting off in Seno at 4 pm (20 km to Savannakhet) or going straight to Pakse and arrive there ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » South Central Coast » Quảng Nam » Hoi An March 12th 2012

After 5 nights in Mui Ne, Da Lat and Nha Trang it was time to move on so we booked ourselves on a sleeping bus for the 30th of January and after 11 exhausting hours we finally arrived in the most beautiful town in Central Vietnam....... HOI AN! We spent out days walking around the ancient town centre, having cold beers and enjoying the local specialities like Cao Lau, Fried Wonton, White Rose and Fish in Banana Leaves. DELICIOUS! On the first evening we met Lolo and Louis again (the Canadian couple that saved us in Da Lat) and had a funny night out with them with loads of drinks, music and pool matches. After a few drinks we were dancing like crazy. After sleeping in the next day I said bye to them as they ... read more

WE ARE SILLY! At the moment we arrived in Mui Ne we regretted that we are travelling in Vietnam during TET. Oh sorry, actually we already regretted it once we asked for the price of the bus tickets from Saigon to Mui Ne. We completely underestimated that as prices in Saigon were normal but everywhere else they doubled or tripled or .......... After 3 hours looking for a room we found a room for 20$. It wasn't great but did its job. Ryan was so fed up that we decided to leave the next day. Luckily, we got a seat on the afternoon bus as the morning bus was full. In the evening we went for some food in the place where I ate last time and which had been really great - not this time ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City » District 1 February 24th 2012

We left Phnom Penh on the 22nd of January in the morning and after a straight forward border crossing we arrived in Saigon in the afternoon on Chinese New Year's Eve (TET for Vietnamese people). Most of the shops outside of District 1 were closed as the people headed to their families for celebrations. In the alleyway we stayed in families gathered and played cards and BINGO! Ryan felt at home straight away but it was nothing in comparison to Gala Bingo as he pointed out with slight disappointment. Poor guy. We found a place to stay quite easily and had nice Vietnamese noodle soup in the evening before we started enjoying Saigon Beer in a street bar for 10.000 VND (0.50$). The next day we didn't do much (as usual; haha) apart from walking around, ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh January 21st 2012

We left Kampot on the 19th in the morning at 7 am and - guess what? - the bus left right on time and afte 4.5 hours we arrived in Phnom Penh. As we drove into the city I really liked but this changed the very second we got off the bus. A huge crowd of Tuktuk drivers was awaiting us and wouldn't even let my smoke my cigarette in peace even though I told them to leave me alone the entire time. We wanted to go to the Royal Guesthouse as according to the Lonely Planet it is a great place to stay. We took a Tuktuk for $1 (5 mins; he wanted $3; RIP OFF) and had a look into the room and walked out again straight away as it stank like sewage. Unfortunately, ... read more

Alright - it's HAPPY HOUR!! An enthusiastic American (Will) welcomed us in the Magic Sponge Guesthouse in Kampot. After explaining us what kind of rooms he has available we made our decision and sat down at the bar for a cold draft beer (HH 12-4pm, draft beer $0.50). We had a few beers and went to a massage by the blind afterwards which was very relaxing. That was our first day in Kampot. The next day wasn't very different. Having a couple of beers, reading and just chilling out. By then we had found out that Will has a great laugh - HEHEHEEEE!! We stayed in Kampot for one week and actually didn't do anything apart from relaxing, drinking beer, playing pool, having great food and playing cards. On the third day in Kampot we got ... read more
