On the plane I started to feel really alone, there was no one to talk to and nothing to do. I slept for a while but when I woke up I had the urge to talk to someone so I ended up missing Cam a lot. After I got off the plane I went to ask whether or not Camellia Hotel had a bus (like it says in the Lonely Planet). Turns out there was no bus but the man put me on a bus going in that direction (although he told me to get off at a stop way far away from where I was to get off). Fortunately I had the map with me so I just followed it until I thought I needed to get off and I got off and walked, which ... read more

I was just looking for a restaurant from the Lonely Planet but I didn't find the first one I was looking for so I went to the second one and on the way I found a great looking Korean restaurant, but of course every good thing comes with its' bad. When I was eating there was a really loud little girl behind me, her parents just ignored her. She made me think of how I know her parents and Cam and I are different. Cam doesn't let me speak loudly or draw attention to us so I know that he would never let our child be like this. I think Cam and I would be great parents. On another note, today it rained a lot, unfortunately I think this is the rainy season. The very first ... read more

Yunnan province - abode of Mountain people, and one of those 'must see' areas in china. So I've been told anyway. I was in Yunnan as part of our annual company retreat - a 4 day fiasco that is mostly holiday, with a sprinkling of company meeting. Our destination was Lijiang, with a 4 hour stop over in Kunming each way. We landed in Kunming mid morning to be greeted by a gloomy rainy day. So instead of walking the streets, we headed for the relatively sheltered safety of Green Lake park. Parks in China are interesting more so for anthropological rather than horticultural viewing. Not that they're ugly, but rather, the collection of old, young and quirky makes for much for entertainment than well manicured plants. Old people are particularly fun to watch in parks, ... read more

Fuimos a cenar a los ... read more

So another Hard Sleeper train experience is beside us. This time it was a tiring 23 hour journey and we were lucky enough to secure the highly sought after beds beside the stinky toilet and smoking area with a door that didn't close. Bleeurgh! However we met a lovely Chinese student called Dong (or Purple is her chosen English name). She was great company during the trip. We helped her with some of her English homework and in return she tried (in vain) to teach us some Chinese. All in all it was a really pleasant journey, with some fabulous scenery. Our digs for this stay was the Camellia Hotel. 12 euro for an ensuite room with a free brekkie buffet-bring it on! Kunming wasn't planned as a high point of our journey, more as a ... read more

So today was travel day. We got up around 6ish this morning, checked out of our sketchy room in Huangshan and hopped on a bus bound for Hangzhou. For those of you that are interested, don't do what we did...we went in a circle from Hangzhou to Shanghai to Huangshan and back to Hangzhou. But hey, I was in 4H - learn to do by doing right? Anyway, we took a 4hr bus ride to Hangzhou which as ok (albeit some typically expected crazy highway driving and nice scenery). When we got into Hangzhou around 1130 we hopped into a place to eat. We got my staple white radish and pork (?) suprise soup along with some bok choy-esque dish for a whopping total of 13rmb (about 2CDN). After the bad service and questionable washing of ... read more

Eenmaal in het park ... read more

Nogle flinke sikkerhedsfolk i Chongquing fandt dem ... read more

We did feel that we had selected a good hotel but were delighted when we got here - the New Era hotel is a cheap 30 yuan taxi ride from the airport (about $4) and is set in the middle of an interesting part of the city - the Yunnan Provincial Museum, the Bird and Flower Market, local mosques, old shopping streets and great pedestrian shopping avenues are all around it. The Provincial Museum has an excellent collection of bronzes from the ancient kingdoms of this part of China, well presented and actually labelled in English. The admission is cheap, just over a dollar. Nearby is the Bird and Flower Market, a large market which sprawls over several streets. There are not just birds but all sorts of pets for sale - birds, chipmunks, rabbits, ... read more

After teaching for 4 months and extending my contract with my school in Simao, it was time to have a long deserved holiday for 2 months. The plan was to travel most of the southern provinces of China beginning in the capital of my province, Kunming. I took a 8 hour bus journey with Jess (a Gapper from the Sichuan province who was also traveling) after the 8 hour bus journey we arrived in Kunming at around 6:00pm and then decided to walk to the hostel, where I had frequently stayed before called the Hump. Once we arrived we had a western meal of pasta as a reward for the journey and also ran into some other Gappers. Didn't have a late night and ended up in bed by about 10:00pm. The next day we met ... read more
