Hi Le. Li Jing Le. Thanks for the drinks and the lunch and for introducing us to your friends. I've bought a camera now and you'll see the results when we get to Hong Kong. Hope you're well. Here's a few pictures that we took when we were in Kunming. Nathalie & Jason ... read more

Arriving (unintentionally) in Kunming at the tail-end of Golden Week was a guarantee of low accommodation availability and high prices, but we were lucky to bump into a couple of Westerners working in the city who persuaded a cafe owner to phone round a couple of hotels for us. The outcome was an extremely acceptable room in a building at the south end of Cuihu Park, whose lake and bridges provide a pleasant circuit for strollers throughout the day. This is also close to the Yunnan University campus and a slew of expat restaurants and cafes. With a mere 2 million inhabitants, Kunming is by no means a large city by Chinese standards and I never felt a sense of being crowded. Like the other cities we'd passed through, it seemed modern and not at all ... read more

First Impressions of China Arriving in China is like getting hit with a tonne of bricks, thousands upon thousands of cultural bricks which individually could be handled with ease, but in such numbers are just totally overwhelming. Even the smallest task, such as finding lunch, can become a headache here as English is virtually non-existant. Of course, the local people are friendly and willing to help you out, if only you could explain to them what it is that you are after. You end up making a hell of a lot of mistakes and eating a lot of rubbish food, but hey, this is what travelling is all about - learning to cope. Actually, I hope travelling is not about rubbish food, that would really cramp my style. After missing my first bus from Hekou to ... read more

Got on the night train out of Hanoi to Lao Cai on the Chinese border. By luck we had the whole train berth to ourselves, and it seemed to be a private car a cut above what we'd been in coming up the coast - cleaner and with a nifty lamp on the table for atmosphere. One nifty lamp and suddenly you feel you're on the orient express. We awoke to the conductors knock next morning and spilled out into Lao Cai at daybreak. We located a cafe, had breakfast and then headed to the border. Goodbye delicious Vietnamese style coffee (Secret: condensed milk). Stern Vietnamese officials scrutinized our passports and stamped us out, then stern Chinese officials scrutinized our passports and stamped us in. The Chinese side also asked for our ID cards, so ... read more

Imagine my childish delight to find out our hostel (the Hump) in Kunming is on a road called Fuxing Cun. Brilliant! I must apologise for my rant against Pandas in the last blog, but seriously: no-one would care less about them if they wern't so damn cute. Anyway. Back to Kunming. We opted for the much more sensible plane ride (1hr) opposed to the train (22hr). Flight was ok and it was nice to land in warm weather. I can dispose of the jumper for the first time since Honkers and hopefully that will be last of that. Kunming is definitely the nicest city so far in China. It is much more green and has a much more mediterranean feel to it. Unfortunately we only have a couple of days to enjoy it. The only ... read more

As we've had quite a hectic couple of weeks (seriously, this travelling malarky really takes it out of you!) we've decided that we ought to take it a bit easier from now on! Kunming is a lovely city, and was the first time we'd seen blue skies since we left the Great Wall 2 weeks ago - there is just so much smog in this country! Not only blue skies but it has flowers and grass areas which is a real treat from the usual concrete etc. So we didn't do a whole lot in Kunming other than go to the Shilin Stone Forest which is a 3 hour train ride away (and only 50p!). As the name suggests, this is a forest of stone. It was quite impressive to start with but 2 hours ... read more

The flight to Kunming was very much like the flight from Changsha to Shanghai -- painless. Once again, I was amazed by how quickly everyone boarded the plane. In Changsha, we managed to start the boarding process just fifteen minutes before the scheduled departure and we left on time. In Xi'An, we were done boarding (a packed 767, mind you) fifteen minutes before the scheduled departure. One other thing about Chinese flights, the captain never once came on the intercom. Our "purser" took care of all of the announcements -- in Chinese and English too, mind you. The other thing I love is leaving (or arriving) in a city of 5+ million people and not even waiting behind a single aircraft to take off. Will the wonders never cease?! I managed to catch a public bus ... read more

We landed safly in kunmig - the capital of yunan county. The wind in high altitude are not stable so the landing was hard and also taking off - later in our story. When we landed we tried to enjoy a few minutes more in the safe atmosphare of the terminal before we left and tried to catch a texi. That was a difficult task. The routine was like that - Amir wait with our backpacks - Noa try to show the driver where we want to go - meanwhile many chinese enter the cab and it drives away. After 20 minutes we got the idea and just entered oneof them and then told him where to go. kunming is a very impressing city. remark: just now a 12 years old budehist monk , dressed ... read more

“Yes - here I am!” In the famous and always warm “spring-city” Kunming! Predominantly famous as drugs-import place, as it is located close to Vietnam, Thailand and Laos. And warm, because of its southern location. Well, what can I say, I just arrived on time after the first snow-storm for ages rushed over the city. What was left over, was cold & gray, not the best conditions for my regeneration of a winter-stay in Beijing! And: they don’t have any heating south of Yangtze River, which brought me to the fast decision: my stay here won’t take too much time. I first checked in into “Hump Youth Hostel”; although conditions were not as satisfying as in Chengdu, at least the prices were more than the double … well, at this point things just could turn better! ... read more

Well, our last day in Kunming of course came with more fun. We woke up excited to get out of the city, and felt great after we had a couple hours to kill at the internet bar catching up on emails and blogging. Finally, something gone right in Kunming! but wait, hold that thought...! After the internet we went to the Laos consulate to pick up our passports with our new Laos visa's before our 12:40 bus (that we had bought tickets for) left. But no! not so easy! when we got to the consulate at 11:45 it was CLOSED, not to open until 1:30!! Kunming drops the bomb again. So we went to the bus station to change our tickets to a later time. All was great and we booked another luxurious sleeper bus for ... read more
