On our way from Kunming to Guillin we got our camera stolen so before we even had the chance to download our photos, (and there were some good ones.... sob!) we lost them! So we are publishing our recent blogs without the photos (we had saved them and were gonna download our pics). Still we are feeling more positive now.... it's not the end of the world, and no one is hurt. We are prob gonna buy a new camera in the next couple of weeks and perhaps get a groovy kodak disposable to keep us going! We figure a lot of our tour group had the same photos so we can copy all theirs!... read more

There are rules in Kunming as in all towns, in all societies, but the young expats, a tribe of drifters, don't much adhere to them. One guy, I forget his name, remains behind bars, caught with a large possession of drugs a few months ago. A girlfriend paid him a visit. I forget her name too. She invited Joan but he declined. Like most in Kunming he had distanced himself from the pusher, told me in a taxi ride various instances that summarized the enprisoned foreigner's fate as following logically. There are plenty of pills in Kunming. Little baggies exchange hands, conversations mention 'pink ones', 'green ones'. It comes from labs in Guangzhou is one story or smuggled across from Burma. In the hillsides throughout Yunnan the clear mild weather encourages cannabis to grow wild. In ... read more

well Tomorrow we get on a 27 hour sleeper bus bound for Luang Prabang, and it's goodbye China, at least for now. Kunming pulled out all the stops to entice me to stay. The weather's great, the air in this city is clear, there's great people around and a whole universe full of fantastic cheap street food. We met a very nice Chinese girl called Ju who told us we can save time and cash by taking a bus that goes express to Laos from Kunming, saving us several seperate long trips and overnights in small towns on the way. NOt that I mind the small towns, but getting on a bus in one city and waking up in another country is pretty appealing. As well as having the comfort of lots of Chinese people on ... read more

so we finally made it out of dali. we followed the green laser. we drank absinthe and betel-nut flavoured vodka and mojitos (and beer, of course). we felt sorry for ourselves and sat and watched dvds at the lazy book cafe. we ate tasty fried street food, and also the best pizza i've had in china (fucking awesome - the bad monkey bar deserves a pat on the back. they even managed to remember that i didn't want cheese on my half). we met some great people, including re-meeting some crew we'd met in chengdu. we played two gigs, both of which rocked, and the second of which got us free dinner, drinks and 200 kuai - we even had a p.a. setup for that one, and flyers! yes, look out for fungal horses' tour of ... read more

Kunming is supposed to be known to feel like Spring all four seasons of the year. That said, the weather is mild and great for growing flowers. I read an article about about Yunnan's flower industry, and Yunnan province produces one of the most flowers in Asia. The market in Dounan, near Kunming is Asia's largest flower exchange and exporter of flowers. I was curious about this and wanted to go see it for myself. I asked the taxi driver from the bus station, and he happened to be in the rose business for 10 years before becoming a driver. He said that locals now rent out their farmland to others local Kunming people don't grow flowers anymore. Anyway, he told me that I needed to go to Dounan at 1:00 AM in order to really ... read more

So I woke up early today, Monday the 29th…as I went to sleep early. Nothing wrong with that. Had a scrumptious breakfast…all you can eat buffet included in the price of the room…oh yea. Two plate fulls and I was set. So I don’t think I mentioned but last night when I arrivied back in Kunming from Yuanyang and the bus ride from hell, I decided I would take care of a few things…got stamps for some postcards that’ll send…TBD…and take out cash as I seem to be going through quite a bit…at least more than in the first month, but I do have to remember that the month before I paid for 90% of it upfront so I’m actually doing pretty well. I get to the bank and ummmm, where is my ATM card?!? EFF. ... read more

Kunming may well be called the City of Eternal Spring, a title that we'd had no quibble with back in May, but the couple of weeks we spent there this time around were more marked by decidedly non-springlike rain, grey skies, and cold temperatures. Apart from the fact that it had been one of the more pleasant Chinese cities we'd visited, it was also a hub for flights to Myanmar as well as having plentiful connections to Shanghai, so was ideally placed to enable us to get to our intended destinations when we each went our separate ways. We'd both been feeling a little travel-weary, and a fortnight of relaxation and research appealed enormously. We ate many of our meals at a cafe called Salvador's near the university, one of a selection of Western-themed eateries (and, ... read more

I took a flight from Jiuzhaigou to Kunming. M and I parted at the airport. The best Y900 spent ever. Saved me a 10 hour bus ride and who knows how long train ride. I'm in Kunming, Yunnan now! I visited Shilin ("Rock Forest") in Kunming today. This area is 2 hours away from Kunming and I took the organized car from the hotel (Y70 round trip). The entrance to Shilin is Y140 (Y100 with your expired Bruin ID)! Shilin is a karst rock forest that was under ocean 270 million years ago and water made these formations. It's quite interesting. The rocks reminded me of Huangshan and Guilin. They are pretty and interesting, but I wasn't totally impressed. I was annoyed that the place looked more like a "rock park" than a rock forest. There ... read more

Here's goes, my first entry in this travelblog site. I'm not sure what I need to do so this is likely to be quite an interesting session. Well, Marg, Sue & I got here intact. The flights involved from Melb to here, Kunming, were long & tiring & broken by a 7hr wait at Bangkok Airport. We were poorly slept, as would be expected, and saw the opportunity for a relaxing shoulder massage at Bangkok to rub away the knots and kinks one picks up in the close confinement of economy flying. Boy, were we wrong. These petite ladies had the strongest fingers, and elbows, and weren't afraid to use them. I had opted for the 45min service and spent most that time in that place somewhere between pleasure and pain and in fear that I ... read more

It's very surprising to me that all of China has the same music, I can go to whatever place I want and sing along to the Chinese and Western music since it's been the same ever since I first moved to China. I thnk it's pretty strange, if every place in America had the same type of music people would go on strike. I'm just sitting now listening to the music as I'm waiting for my bus to Jinghong and there's not too much to do. Unlike yesterday today the weather was great, I took an umbrella with me this time because of the sun, not because of the rain. So today I went to two beautiful places to take some great pictures. The first place I went to was Yuantong Temple where I saw a ... read more
