Hi again all... So I got off the train in Kunming around 7am and went to the Camellia hotel and got a dorm bed for 30Y... But before I went to my bed I email a fellow blogger that I met in Chengdu that was sharing the same hostel with me to see If I left my glasses there at the hostel... But the computers weren't working so I called the hostel in Chengdu... The guy at the hostel went up to the room and after about 5mins came back to the phone and told me that they had my glasses and that they would bring them down to Kunming when they arrived the next day... Thank you very much Robbie and Vicky or their Blogger name Occasionally- Bob... What nice people that they are... I ... read more

so many problems, so annoyed! We spent two days in Kunming which were filled with frustrations all over the place. The city's sights were a dissappointment, it's specialty "over the bridge noodles" tasted like Cambells chicken soup, we got lost wandering the city for hours, and then my cell phone broke. I spent half the next day at a shop trying to translate my problem to 6 different shop assistants only to find out 4 hours later they couldn't help me. WIthout food for most of the day and another walking tour of the city, Camille and I were not happy. We sat down for dinner and ordered a ham and mushroom dish. WOW! it was the best thing we had eaten so far and could not get enough of it! we were sad to finish ... read more

I took the morning train from Guilin to Kunming. It is a 22 hour train ride, so there is really nothing to be lost or gained from taking the AM or PM departure. But Lisa in Yangshou was able to get me the am one, which is 25% less. Aside from the usual chaos that ensues whenever a large group of Chinese people attempt to do something at the same time, the boarding process was not eventful. Each car has about 10 cabins in it, with six bunks per cabin. It was about freezing in the compartment, but there was no heat, so we all just bundled up and slept in our clothes. I took a good long nap, because it was necessary to get up very early in Yangshou to get the bus to Guilin ... read more

We arrived in Kunming at 7:25 am on an overnight train from Nanning. We check into the Camellia Hotel. It is very reasonably priced, but you must live with a slight smell in the room….it does seem clean other than that. There is no in room or wireless internet as the booking agent claimed there was. They have a business center that charges 10 Yuan an hour for use. We needed to use it to try the address for the Hump Pilot Monument. We could not locate it, as the only information is that it is in a park on the west side of town??? So we asked around the hotel staff and tourist agency, they had no idea what we were talking about. We are surprised that people are not familiar with the Fighting Tigers, ... read more

It was a long trip back to Zhongdian which saw us pass through fresh snow, sunshine and driving snow and rain - definately four seasons in one day. We held hopes that the snow might even reach Zhongdian but its lack of altitude meant that we were only treated with some rain and a bloody freezing cold front. We arrived back into the warmth of the guesthouse before Nunny did a spot of shopping in the old town and we settled back in the hostel and played with the animals and the locals for a while. Heading out after a while for our final tibetan meal and then turning it in at a reasonable hour for our flight at 8am the next morning. It was a brief trip back to Kunming but one that saw us ... read more

After a fairly restless night where we realised why our place was so cheap - because there seems to be no form of a sound barrier between our room and the other 2 rooms that share the 'apartment', we discover that the cafe downstairs though serves the most incredible food. With breakfast taken care of, and a map in hand we do a bit of shopping then being Sunday we head out to the University where we've been told there is an "English corner" of sorts. Looking forward to being of some use to the local community (or maybe just being the centre of attention) we grab a taxi out there, walk around admiring the grounds and the studious nature of the attendants. The place was a hive of activity! It's SUNDAY kids! Go home and ... read more

Man in Hotel (with very loud, American accent): Are you American? Me: No. American Man: Where are you from? Me: I'm from England. American Man: What! You're from Australia? Me: Um...no, I'm from England. American Man: Uh? What city are you from? Me: London. American Man: Ah, so you're from Britain. Why didn't you say? Kunming, in many ways, reminds me of Dalian. It's clean (for China anyway), modern and for the first day or so I felt like I hadn't moved anywhere different. It's the number of Westerners I encountered that hit me as different. Kunming, as opposed to Dalian, is definitely on the tourist trail and it can seem dificult to get away from them (see dialogue above). We didn't actually do a great deal in Kunming. Paul's just finished a two-month trek around ... read more
