As soon as we left the Islands we basically wanted to be back there straight away. There is no denying those islands were great, but we were off to Penang to meet up with our friend Aimee. The overnight bus ride from Kota Bharu to Penang wasn't too bad actually, I think we all fell in an out of sleep. Freezing ride though. And we made it into Penang in the middle of the night with no accomadation booked. We wandered around for a while and eventually got a bus at 5 in the morning to the beach area and went into one of the hostels and sleept. When comparing the Penang beach to the Islands, basically the contrast goes along the lines of going from amazing beaches and sand to a shit hole. The Penang ... read more

I should really get on top of these entries and not leave them for a few months later to do, oh well. Best time of the year to go to the island, Kecil. The storms had just finished in late Jan and although the locals weren't sure as to whether or not the islands would be open and they recommended we just go to Langkawi, we took the chance to go to the Islands up north and it proved be a great idea. Not only did we get awesome accomadation at a cheaper price, we had much of the island to ourselves. Yes there were still tourists and backpackers but compared to the islands in Thailand these were so much better. The best thing about the island is that everyone was low key and relaxed and ... read more

About a year to this day I was treking through Chaing Mai in Thailand and I thought that was a great place to go trekking. After trekking through Teman Negara, it is clear that this place is simply much better and a harder more rewarding trek. To reach the place of the teman negara involved a 5 hour bus drive from KL and then a 3 hour boat ride on a small little wooden boat. After the epic journey we booked into our hostel and headed for a much needed dinner by the river side. Truly a great place to have dinner. The next day we would be treking for 2 days, very excited to do this. We ended up having a great local tour. And we were joined by 4 other trekkers. Not your typical ... read more

Taking advantage of the cheap Air Asia tickets we all set off to Malaysia for a Feb holiday. Best time for us all to go because it was a quick much needed break before we went back to University and started 3rd year. Kuala Lumpur is a city. And what I mean by that is that it is sort of just like Bangkok or any other major Asian cities except it does seem a lot easier to get around. The hussle and bustle of China town is just like Khoa San Road in Bangkok, so it was good to get away from there. We stayed at a hostel near China town that was influnced by Bob Marley. And I have to say it was one of the cleanest hostels across Asia and the service was really ... read more

After the bus drive we arrived in Kyoto and just from getting off the bus it seemed a lot more chillaxed and nicer then Tokyo. We went straight to the backpackers and crashed because we hadn't sleeped. And it was a nice place and much cleaner then the last place. The next day we just simply went around town and looked at all the different temples. One of them was amazing and huge, it was a castle I believe. The next day I met up with Kido (I was an hour late) and we rode to the bamboo forests, well actually rode half way before getting the train. The forest was awesome and nice and cool to walk around in. Probably the highlight of my trip. We also attempted to go to another castle but it ... read more

After a long stop over in Malaysia, me and my family arrived in Tokyo. Instead of having a 21st birthday present or party (I ended up having a house party anyways) we decided to go on a holiday to Japan. I choose Japan mainly because 1) It was an expensive country to travel around and I could do it with my parents and wouldnt have to worry about money 2) Well that's really it. When we got there we went to this horrible crummy hostel and unpacked and explored but were too jet lagged to do anything really. The next morning we got up at 5am and went to the fish markets which was amazing and good. The tuna fish were huge and the hustel and bustle there was extreme. Glad I wore runner and not ... read more

After experiencing heaps of horrid bus drives in Laos we decided to cheat and get a flight from Laos to Phenom. Yes I know it was expensive, but sanity was really important at this point for us. We arrived in the capital and were inidated with people trying to take us to their hotel. We ended up going to one in the centre of town, where we met good our great tuk tuk diver Mr. something. He was a character and a half. We decided to get as much out of the day. We started off at the capital museum, which although was nice to wonder around, we really didn't have any idea of actually what we were looking at. After skipping through there we were taken to the Cambodian palace, which was really nice. The ... read more

After a horrible and I mean horrible bus drive from the Laos boarder to LP we arrived at 4am and crashed. The worst bus drive I have ever been on in my life! Never ever doing that again. Anyways, the place we arrived to was amazing though. It was peaceful, quietish and really nice. The food was the highlight, shakes, bagguttes and everything French. The night market at LP was really really good, it had alot of interesting things and it was extremly long. I didn't realise exactly how long it was until we started walking down it. It had heaps of shops and great things to see. One morning, I, whilst the others stayed in bed, got up to see the alms giving to the monks. There were so many tourists, but it was still ... read more

After the adventure and a half to get to Bangkok, I arrived at 2am in the morning. Basically too tired to wait around for the bus or the morning, so I got a taxi to Koh San and got a dodgy looking hostel for the night but I was in much need for sleep. I spent the first day wondering around the markets waiting for Katrina and Ange to make it to Bangkok that night. When I checked my e-mail I found out that Ange didn't make the flight, so me and Katrina had to wait 2 extra days for her to come, which wasn't that bad really. We got to go to the floating markets, which yes they are a bit touristy, but I still thought it was pretty cool. We also saw the infamous ... read more

After we finished the 6 week course in China and said goodbye to everyone, I still had a week in China before I had to fly down to. So a bunch of us being Monica, Max, Jeike, Matty and Sam headed to the moutain region of Anhui. I have never in my life been so cold, it was beyond a joke. Never going back to China in the winter. I always thought I was a winter person but clearly I was not. The hostel we stayed in was the 'Youth hostel' and it was really nice, empty but good. We walked around the old town, tired and in a daze after a sleepless train ride. After a good night sleep we decided to climb the famous Huangshan mountain. We climbed a fair bit and then got ... read more
