Pineapple in the morning, pineapple at night, makes you feel alright.... I have been staying on the beach(literally) on the coast of Cambodia in a town called Sihanuokville. The town is nothing to write home about but the lifestyle on the beach is incredible. Fantastic!! I stay in a small room above a bar on the beach for two bucks a night. My room consists of a ma tress on the floor, a mosquito net, a fan, 4 walls that is it. So simple, so perfect. Ever morning I wake up, have a swim, grab a book and lay in the sun and eat pineapple. It's great, these ladies walk around with these baskets of fruit on their heads and sell you fruit. Also lobster, spring rolls, donuts and beer. I have been hanging out with ... read more

We arrived at our beach resort which was quiet and very scenic despite the poverty which surrounded us. The next few days was a chance to relax and detach ourselves from reality, taking in the sun, the warm sea and the endless sand! We went on an island trip for the day with just us on the island playing volley ball/ snorkelling and fishing. The food we had was great- barbequed barracuda cooked on a fire on the beach! Hey i even caught a fish with a bottle, a hook and some bate. Bayus our guide for the day was excellent and all in all was a great day! The evening was taken up with playing pool and having a great meal on the beach, which incidently was all lit up with coloured lights/ candle light ... read more

We arrived two days ago after our long car trip from Siem Riep. The majority of the ride was uneventful besides the part when our cab driver tried to sell us to another driver in Phenom Phen. It took a lot (including me getting in the drivers seat pretending to steal the car) but eventually we made it down here. Shankerville is beautiful. Actually let me clarify. The resort we are staying at is beautiful. So beautiful that we actually havent left the property the whole time we've been down here. Our hotel borders the beach and the Thailand Sea (the water has been so warm that even sheila was sighted in the water on more than one occassion). Yesterday was a particularly fun day! So fun that i cannot even share it on the blog ... read more

I can not believe a week has gone by......but that is the gift of Sihanoukville. The days are slow and peaceful and the nights are long and cheerful. A four-hour bus ride (which felt like seven) landed me at the scenic coastal city of Sihanouville a bit tired and cranky. Maybe it was the small seats, the bumpy road and the baby which kept peeing in the aisle. But once I settled into a guesthouse (once again $5 per night with TV but no hot water) and laid my eyes on the beach as the sunset into the Gulf of Thailand, I was at peace. I jumped into the water and upon exiting, I met a group of lads from the UK (who would become my posse for the next week) who were staying on the ... read more

After a few hours in our fav minibus (every seat seemed remarkably more uncomfortable than the last), we arrived at our rather grand-looking hotel and, after a lovely shower and a briefing we headed for the beach! The main drag, Ocheutal, was full of cafes, umbrellas and people who consisted mainly of vendors selling fruit, lobsters, pedicures and waxing! The latter two were particularly rude commenting on the state of everyone's feet/legs-obviously unaware that this was not the best sales strategy. After lunch we decided to try out the far end of the beach which looked less crowded. This was an excellent plan. Serendipity beach was just that. We found a lovely seafront restaurant and booked a table for dinner, then settled down by the beach and played frisbee in the sea. Note that it rained ... read more

With Monday the 31st a public holiday, Romy, Julie and I decided to get out of Phnom Penh for the weekend and head for the ocean. Julie is a colleague of Romy's, and has been travelling as an Australian Business Volunteer (ABV) or on assignments with Australian Volunteers International (AVI) for 20 years, working with organisations to improve their management and financial systems. She told me that on her last update form for ABVs, it stated that people we not allowed to volunteer once over the age of 80. She plans to get her last volunteer position at the age of 79 years, 364 days.... So, the three of us piled on the 8am bus from Phnom Penh on Saturday morning, and made the 4 hour trip to the coast. The bus ride is an interesting ... read more

We've finally arrived in Cambodia, arrived in the southern town of Sihanoukville last night it was a crazy experience. We were on a bus for nearly nine hours (it was "supposed" to take 5-6), having eaten nothing and feeling generally peeved. The roads in Cambodia are shocking- not only mud tracks at best but full of pot holes about three feet deep! Anyway we finally arrived, unhurt and in one piece, where all these crazy cambodian kids on motorbikes drove alongside the bus, trying in vain to convince us they could speak fluent English but most could speak very broken English at best- "cheap hotel, i take you, no problem" kind of thing. Anyway after shaking the tail(!) we stopped in a bar for a much needed refreshment and were directed to a really nice place ... read more
