Another bus and we were back at the seaside down in Sihanoukville. We checked into a hotel with a pool and did very little for a few days. Yep, sat by the pool, read a bit, watched our movie channel, watched holidaying Cambodians swim ( generally fully clothed ) and that's about it. We were too lazy to even take any photos. Finally, feeling that we should probably do something we bundled into a share taxi for the three hour journey to Kampot. we paid for the 'whole back seat' of the small Toyota Camry that was the taxi but relented as a fourth person bundled into the front on the drivers lap, valuing our lives higher than our personal space ( It turns out that share taxis generally leave when they have seven passengers, not ... read more

Tonight may be a shorter entry, as it is nearly 10pm, and I have been awake since 6am (that actually sounds pathetic, but I am really really tired). We arrived by bus at Sihanoukville, on the Southern Coast, around 11am today, after a good 4hr trip (in a/c) on a coach from Phnom Penh. A tuk-tuk picked us up from the guesthouse at 7am, and drove us with backpacks in tow, to the bus terminal. We boarded the bus to the sound of some beautiful Khmer karaoke, blerring out of the DVD played at the front of the bus. The locals seem to enjoy awakeningly loud karaoke music early in the mornings, as you can be testament to if you stay in our room at the OK Guesthouse, third floor, any day of the year, I ... read more

Hi everyone. It's been a while since my last entry. Somehow i got completely caught up in doing absolutely nothing! Am writing this from Kampot but have just spent 6 days - twice the anticipated stay - yet again - at cambodia's premier beach town, Sihanoukville. I'll start, as usual with getting there... GETTING THERE Our courtesy tuktuk didn't turn up so the 2 of us climbed on the back of a moto (driver & scooter) and legged it to the bus depot and of course it left late so there were no problems with missing it. We took GST bus service and I think that Capitol Buses are better. The bus was a bit cramped and hot as hell, the decrepid air con barely stirred the air. I had the seat directly behind the driver ... read more

Ahhhh Cambodia... Free roaming monkeys, gold temples, huge mountains, amazing beaches, cheap beer, children holding hands with fat, middle-aged men... hang on... Yes, you heard me correctly. The country is amazing, apart from the hideousness of having to see children touting around bars and nightclubs. There is also the small issue of the history of the place... Basically about 30 years ago there was this guy called Pol Pot, who despite sounding like cutlery, was a pretty nasty chap. Actually, he makes Hitler look like a pretty little girl guide. He culled the community of anyone educated, and buried them in mass graves at the Killing Fields... which was perhaps a little harsh. This is especially true when you visit the Killing Fields and there are pieces of human bone under your feet as you walk ... read more

Alright, after my last blog I have been accused of being unromantic..and I have two words to say...Dirty Dancing...thats right...our valentines night was capped off with a painfull viewing of the 1987 chick flick Dirty Dancing ..the whole thing....so that makes up for everything else..I figure watching Dirty Dancing or Footloose or Ghost or basically any 80's movie with Dancing or Patrick Swayzie or a dancing Patrick Swayzie cancels out anything horrible that a boyfriend has ever done.... Ok so we spent another day in Phnom Pehn going to the Genocide museam...it was an old school that was converted into a jail/torture center by the the Khmear Rouge....it has now been turned into a museam..you get to walk through the cells (which used to be classrooms) and see the torture rooms and devices..pretty creepy ..but ... read more

After the past week or so of physically draining days of exlporing the temples at Angkor and the emotionally draining day of visiting the Killing Fields and S-21 in Phnom Penh, it is definetly time for some R&R on the beach. The south-west coast of the gulf of Thialand in Cambodia is lined with beautiful beaches along green waters. The water is warm and the breeze is just what we need to feel comfortable after a super-hot and humid week. We hit the beach right away and it felt so nice to get in the ocean and swim around. The water was as warm as a bath but somehow still refrshing since it was cooler than the air. When the sunset (beautifully) the water was warmer than the air and getting out meant a refreshing coolness ... read more

Well after spending 4 hours on the bus from Phnom Penh thinking about various things in life including my last blog it was time to hit Sihanoukville as part of our journey back to Pattaya along the coast. After arriving at the bus station it was the usual Tuk Tuk and motorcycle madness of people wanting your business and money. We headed off to Serendipity beach area to look for a guest house or bungalow with that taken care of it was time to go the beach for some food. The next day was very chilled out compared to the last week of visiting so many historic places and the overload of your senses in Phnom Penh, We sat on the beach for the majority of the next two days reading and listening to music. After spending 6 days in Cambodia you cannot ignore the fact that there is alot of poverty and hardship in this country and it really is a wakeup for some people and brings home the reality of alot of people myself included who complain about life at home. There is so much we take for granted at home food, shelter, and condtions in which we live, I cannot fully explain what seeing all this meant but it is a world away from seeing people living badly on television. The kids that wander the street and sell items ( Lonley Planet books $3) are in need of money not because they are out earning some money to finance their PS2 game habit but because there family may need to eat from a book or postcard sale. Well, I know this blog is supposed to be about Sihanoukville like but I was in Bangkok for 5 days beforehand so I'll get that bit out the way first. First night I was there we met 2 Irish lads called Sean and Paul so had a few beers with them but when we were pissed me and Alex did a runner from his missus and got a tuk tuk up to Patpong. Had a few beers there then headed back to Khao San to find Cindy sat there with a face like a slapped arse and the mood to suit so I thought fuck this and headed on home after another beer or two and several bitchy comments from across the table towards us 2. The next night I met a girl called Tukta and ... read more

Have you ever been so pathetically sick that you start pleading, 'either take me or leave me God, but please make up your mind?' We almost made it, well I did, Jim got sick in the first week, but I was almost there! Only a week on the beach and a few days tying things up in Bangkok left, and I get sick. Very sick. Violently sick. I looked up from the toilet at one stage and saw Dylan Moran staring back at me in the mirror. That's how sick. We've been in Sihanoukville about 4 days now, but all I've seen is the inside of the toilet and nature programs on the telly. David Attenborough is good medicine, Steve Irwin is not, but then you don't need me to tell you that. Anyway, I think ... read more
