It’s been some busy days here after I arrived. Today I have the day off, and I have spent the most of the day catching up on my sleep - which has been brilliant. Went to the market today in order to buy shoes and some clothes, but the shoes were not so good, and apparently I am too big to buy clothes here. It can really do harm to one’s self-image to try to buy clothes in a country where everyone is the size of a ten year old back home. I have been invited to a wedding in a couple of days, which have caused me a bit of a headache. I didn’t bring any nice clothes with me, or at least not in the “attending-a-wedding-party” category, and since I am too big to ... read more

SO, finally in Cambodia, Sihanoukville. After a rather bothersome trip from Australia I am finally here. First I managed to be refused to get on my plane from Cairns to Brisbane. These very cheap airlines are such a pain in the bum. Then, at the international airport in Brisbane I managed to confuse everyone there by claiming that 'yes, I do want to go to Cambodia', and 'no, I do not have a visa yet', and the killer sentence were of course 'no, I do not have a return ticket, or any ticket as such out of the country'. Many phonecalls later, many airport officials later, I finally got them to agree that maybe, but just maybe, there was a slight chance that the Khmer custom would let me in. Pointing out to them that there ... read more

We were off early the next morning to Sihanoukville, the beach town on the coast of Cambodia named after the King. This was a great change of scenery after days of war history. Reading, relaxing, eating seafood and swimming took up most of our time. A highlight was a day trip to a small island a few kilometres off shore. It was a perfect day for more swimming and relaxing and the scenic boat ride out there almost made us forget we were still in a developing country. It didn’t take us long to remember after the propeller fell off on the ride back. Cambodia's coast is beautiful without a doubt but the huge number of overweight, pasty European men turned us of it a little. So we decided to make for the border a little ... read more

In mid-December we caught an early morning bus from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville on the coast of Southern Cambodia. Gerry decided to buy a baquette filled with cold meat from a street vendor at the bus station - big mistake! 24 hours later, full scale diarrhoea! Fortunately no sickness, and after a day he was eating as well as ever. Sihanoukville is a bit shabby and is spread out across a number of beaches. We stayed in the Mealy Chenda Guesthouse above Victory Beach with a lovely view out to sea, particularly at sunset. They do a wicked barbequeue evening where you cook you're own food on a charcoal stove on your table. The sunsets on the beach are also worth beholding. The sun sets around 6pm, after which we would head for a great little ... read more

Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville - Part 1 - Day 1 - 06:20 AM I awoke this morning in Phnom Penh to a gloriously beautiful day with the air cool and a crisp breeze blowing, which seemed like a great way to start another journey out of the capital and make my way to the coastal towns of Cambodia. After grabbing my 2 small bags and making my way downstairs to the street, I hailed a motorcycle taxi and headed out for the Central Market and the G.S.T. bus station located near there. Paying a generous 2,000 Riel (.50) to the driver, I decided to head over to the large, Chinese "Sorya Restaurant" for a spot of tea and an omelet after purchasing a seat on a southbound bus for 14,000 Riel ($3.50) Sorya Chinese Restaurant in ... read more

The tragedy of Cambodia's infamous past is that it was a result of outside force, compounded by weak leadership, that permitted the atrocities of the 1970's to occur. In a case of paranoid whimsy Prime Minister Sihanouk committed his country to its nebulous take on communism because he thought the USA planned to assassinate him. His 'Peoples Socialist Communist Party' was no such thing yet its name was implication enough for the North Vietnamese to assume sanctuary on Cambodian soil. This, coupled with the CIA threat from across the border, and Sihanouk casually acquiesced ( Film making was his passion anyway). This was not enough. Sensing indifference to his political responsibilities and becoming increasingly aware of the military's desire to align itself with the American cause, there occurred a rural based insurgency forcing Sihanouk to back ... read more

The flight to bangkok was probably the most hilarious flight i have ever been on. so, we are standing at the counter, an english guy infront of us starts talking to us, he's funny, we continue talking, end up getting seperated, my sister and I are at the duty free area, walk around, take a seat, this english guy comes up to us with a bottle of vodka and is like " you wanna shot?".. we accept, he pours three large shots, we are all feeling a bit lightheaded, we walk through the security still holding our cups as he keeps pouring and even asking the security guards if they want a taste.. we enter the aeroplane, my sister and i have seats together and there is a nice indian man sitting in the one beside ... read more
