i was motorcycling when i thought the oncoming cars' driver was asleep. fortunately, it turned out that this car had its' steering wheel on the opposite side. the cars here number about half and half (left vs right hand drive). next time i'll know what to expect, i suspect. that is provided i am not the one asleep.... read more

i have been at 'sihoukanville' just hanging around the beach. did a little bicycling and motorcycling too. day 1: sitting on beach having lunch. appetizer was a fresh coconut. drank the juice first then had it cut open so that i could eat the meat. the main course consisted of grilled squid. it was grilled by a woman carrying her portable wood grill. desert was a pineapple cut fresh at my table. day 4? i rented a motorcycle. went to a national park which was not impressive. however, i did stumble upon a little used trail which brought me to a spot only the locals use, and not many at that. i had a private little beach from which to swim. of course i removed all clothing, as well as anything shiny that might have been ... read more

Besides the Genocide centre one of the most memorable things we did in Phnom Phen was visiting an orphanage in one of the rough suburbs. As we entered the children surrounded us and one 18 year old girl grabbed hold of my hand for ages! They were all so incredibly friendly, smiley and polite, and given their living conditions this shocked me. They share 10 to a small wooden shack with no beds or anything really. We took along a 50 KG bag of rice (almost as big as me!) but apparently this only feeds them for a day. It was very sad to see but good that they were receiving an education and kept off the streets. If anyone wants to do anything charitable the kids of Cambodia really need some help! So we finally ... read more

We spent a week at this beach town called Sihanoukville. It was very nice. We stayed in an English guest house and was really western like- good food, good music, nice people and lots of relaxation. The weather was nice at first but then turned a bit English....... There's not much else than the beach there and there are even more cows on the street than in Lontzen. So everyone can imagine how happy Ariel was to take Photos! We didn't do much there and was mainly reading, playing games, sleeping, drinking and eating. Was a tight schedule, but we managed it all in one week. Now we really need a holiday............ Next stop Vietnam. We got our visa in an express procedure yesterday, cheaper than the regular service (it's Cambodia, huh?!?!? so we skipped the ... read more

I was trying to prevent myself from posting on my blog because I really have nothing to say, but I'm bored so if you don't want to read this one I'll understand. I've kind of conviced myself that you all want to make sure I'm still alive and everything's okay, so that's really why I'm posting... it's all for you! So here's the update: after my last post about the depressing weather it cleared up a little and I headed down to the beach to read and get some sun on my face. When I got to the beach I ran into a familiar face: Maya, a Swedish girl that Amy and I met in Kanchaniburi that I also saw at a rest stop on the bumpy bumpy road from the boarder to Siem Reap. We ... read more

I really hope the weather here gets better soon, this shit is depressing! I guess that's what I get for coming here during the rainy season, seriously considering turning around and heading back to Thailand to do my dive training and seeing some sun again. anyways, if you guys want to look at some photos I've taken they're on a website called photobucket under redhedsrock7, I'd link it for you but you can all figure it out for yourselves if you're that desperate. Warning, none are labelled or organised so have at er! edit: so apparently you can't just have a look... will try to link some of the photos here and see if that's faster than the way I did it before edit: http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y50/redhedsrock7/ should work now, I changed it to be a public gallery ... read more

Well as most of you have heard probably by now thailand went through a military coup but it was peaceful and should be okay but at the first sign of anything go up shit creek without a paddle i will catch the first plane out of there (that is what travel insurance is for) but for now everything looks alright and should be okay for tourists (i saw a news report of tourists taking photos of tanks and the military in bangkok, not that i would do that im smarter than that) so i appreciate the concern but i am still going on with my trip (im basically going to bangkok for the day in 2 days (the 23rd) and catching the night bus to ko toa (the islands). So im going to be hiding out ... read more

Sorry for the lack of updates again i have been really busy and lack of quick internet has hampered my attempts at a good update so it might just have to wait a couple days till im back in phnom phen but right now im in sihanoukville hanging out on the beaches i have had a couple really fun days that include going for a motorcycle (okay they are basically scooters) tour of some small villages, taking a cooking course and going in the back of a pickup through the jungle in pouring rain ( i was soaked) to a ghost town. So please be patient as an update will be in the works in a couple days. I am having a great time and all is going well so i hope everyone is having fun ... read more

On the bus down from PP we met a lovely couple, Nat and Georgie - recently married honeymooners (congrats guys) - one from Australia and the other from UK who suggested that we stay at this place called Cool Bananas which had only been open 3 months and was pretty cheap at $3 a night. Hell yeah sounds good. We arrived in Sihanookville about 5pm, just in time to see the sun from the tenth straight day of glorious weather (so we were told) fade on the horizon. Bring on the sun and beach... Checking in at a place called Cool Bananas, you guessed it - run by an Aussie bloke called Paul (40-50), and his very young Cambodian fiance Amoi (20), we were greeted by the drunken owner who insisted that we indulge in some ... read more
