I booked all my Cambodian tickets on the bus company Capital tour, and, until I left for Thailand, they had been flawless. I left Phnom Pen right on time (ie, I tried to get on the wrong bus 3 minutes before my designated departure time, and they told me as if it was obvious that my bus would pull in front of the station at 7:30, and it was only 7:27), and enjoyed the 4 hour ride down, except for the constant Karaoke VCDs that were playing (see Video from the Phnom Pen Blog for an example). My seat companion was another lovely middle aged women who spoke no English. She came to my aid at a rest stop, where a vendor would not sell my the banana wrapped in sticky rice snack for the same ... read more

With only 4 days left, our trip was winding down, wanting to make the most of our precious time in Cambodia and trying to see as much as we could. The last leg of our trip took us to Sihanoukville for some beach time, Phnom Penh for some urban life, and finally one last wild night out with the boys in Saigon before heading back to Japan. Sihanoukville Jeff and I were determined to spend some time laying out and doing nothing on a beach- thus making us bound for Sihanoukville! Despite having a large coastline along the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia only has one small area used as a beach resort, located 3 hours south of Phnom Penh. The main town there is Sihanoukille, with numerous beaches not far away. Although the beaches of Cambodia ... read more

Mat - Lazy blog and photos: We headed to Sihanoukville on the south coast of Cambodia for Christmas. Ended up spending six days or so there. Its hard to relax on the mainland beach because of the persistant kids selling stuff you don't want and lots of beggars, but we headed to Bamboo Island off the coast which was bliss after a couple of days on the mainland. The comments on the photos should fill you in more. If the videos don't work they will if you head to: http://www.fliqz.com/FliqzWebPublic/Dynamic/proxy.aspx?PID=1723&from=perma :) Trace: After Nicki and I arrived in Phnom Penh we headed to Tuol Sleng Museum, aka S21, a primary school that had been taken over by the Khmer Rouge (absolutely NO relation to the Moulin Rouge) in which over 20,000 Cambodians were tortured and murdered ... read more

Mat: Trace is writing a bit of a blog on our time in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, so I will leave her to it and just post this quick blog on my day visiting the abandoned French Hill Station at Bokor. Seeing as I could hire a 250cc Honda Baja for 8USD I did so and headed out for a days ride by myself. The hill station is about 1000m high nestled on the plateu of a small mountain. The area is now a Cambodian national park, which I wouldn't have thought would have counted for much, but the rangers seem to be trying pretty hard and there are even three camera trap photos on the information board of two different tigers that were photographed in the area, as well as a few other interesting species. From Sihanoukville ... read more

We arrived in Sihanoukville just before midday on Saturday 23rd, we found a place to stay & decided we were going to treat ourselves as it was Christmas. We got an apartment right on the top of a hill overlooking the beach & sea at Serendipity Beach. It had a big balcony, big room with a sofa & cable TV but best of all though it had warm water! We spent the afternoon on the beach in the sun & had a bit of a quiet night, ending up drinking on the balcony under the stars. On Sunday, (Christmas Eve), we decided to go & get some Christmas treats, including Pringles, Champagne & Ferrero Rocher. On the first trip to the shops we got a bit excited & didn't read the box properly & ended up ... read more

On Friday we decided to catch the boat to Phnom Penh which was incredible, it cost more than the bus but was money well spent. We got to see the floating village which is crazy, and some great views. We were collected from our guest house by minibus and were taken to the pier. The bus was designed to hold 14 passengers including the driver but by the time we had collected everyone else and got there we had counted 23 people on board. On Saturday we then traveled by bus to Sihanoukville for a relaxing Christmas on the beach. We arrived at midday and although we had done some research on which guesthouses we hadn't actually booked anywhere to stay. We had decided to treat ourselves and get the best room which was available, the ... read more

Thanks for all the enthusiastic comments. Do enjoy reading them all. It does take a long time though, as the internet here is a slows as a slow boat to China. We have been in Cambodia for a couple of days. Arrived in the early morning, and went out on deck to see the pilot boat approaching. There were literally hundreds and hundreds of fishing boats just coming back into port. It was a completely amazing sight, and they were all waving to welcome us. We tried to get some shots, but as always the sun was in the wrong place. Well, that's our excuse anyway. The first morning we were taken on a trip to the fishing village where all the boats had gone back too. There were lots of roadside shops, including a dentist, ... read more

Hallo to everyone, and many thanks for the messages, which are lovely to see. We had a very very rough night the one that the captain decided to change course, so goodness knows what it would have been like if he hadn't. Lots of people were ill, but of course with our maritime training we were fine. We arruved at the mouth of the Saigon river at around noon the next day, but it took hours and hours to get to the berth at the edge of the city. We took a tour the next day to the Mekong Delta, and it was an immense shock to see the pressure of traffice. Millions upon millions of scotters, some carrying whole families, and very few with any form of crash helmet or other protection. We visited an ... read more

Hello! Tales from the wild continues... We are currently sitting in a beachfront bar in Sihanoukville, a small town on the Cambodian coastline, watching the sea (Gulf of Thailand, or so we believe) lapping at the shores. The view past our computer is a touch different to our usual work one :-) The last week has been pretty busy. After leaving Vientiane for Siem Reap - Cambodia (by plane, hurrah), we checked into a nice little guesthouse and met Mr Han, the world's friendliest tuk tuk driver - who didn't even try to fleece us too much! He took us on a tour of the many temples in the area, Angkor Wat being the most famous. The temples really are amazing - huge, ancient and mostly ruined. The jungle is both supporting and destroying most of ... read more

Hello! Again its been a long gap between entries, that just means I'm having fun! After my moto escapades I spent a couples days in Siem Reap exploring the night life. Met up with Mick and Conor and a couple others and had a couple good nights. After spending ten days in Siem Reap I figured I should get moving... headed down to Sihanouk Ville on the southern coast of Cambodia. Stayed at a place called Chiva's Shack which had a pretty good deal... pay $2 the first night then stay for free... I took full advantage and stayed for 12 days. Spent the first few days relaxing on the beach and drinking at night... there were many beach venders which was a little annoying but after a couple of days of me not buying anything ... read more
