This blog entry is rather late really so i'm just adding it for my own record really. After Phnom Pehn we went down to the coast for a few days..which turned into three and a bit. The place is Sihanoukville and is well on the tourist ciruit of Cambodia. Really there are only tree places on this circuit Phom Pehn, Sihanoukville and Siem Reap, all of which we went to. Fell a bit un adventurous but we only had about 10 days so no time to get off the beaten track really. After Vietnam we also really didn't want the hassle. So we went to the seaside. We found a very nice bungalow/beachut place that almost had a view. You could just about see the sea through the trees. Importantly it had hammocks and plenty of ... read more

De laatste tempel was ... read more

Counting Days I woke up more than a little stressed out. I'd been awake half the night counting the days left until my return to Thailand. I wasn't quite sure what today's date was. I also didn't know exactly how many days I'd spent in Koh Kong, just that they were too many. I really wasn't sure about my travel plans or timing for the rest of the trip. I was convinced I had to leave for Phnom Penh today. I walked out to the Cool Banana bar to grab some breakfast and I told Craig about my worries. He didn't have much help, but he encouraged me to spend more time being laid back and carefree here and less time depressed in Pol Pot and Hun Sen's capitol. I was torn. Planning backwards from my ... read more

Well...after a month and a half of travelling through hills, countryside and villages we have finally made it to the beach. Although its not one of the most beautiful beaches in Asia is was still great! When we got to Sihanoukville we went right to the beach! Within our first 10 minutes we were offered tons of books, postcards, fruit, seafood, manicures, pedicure, massage...anything you could imagine! At first all i wanted was to be left alone to relax. After a while it was fun to talk with all the kids and ladies selling the stuff. We went to a few different beaches when we were in the Sihanoukville area. We first went to the main tourist beach called serendipity. This beach was the nicest and was lined with about 30 restaurants along the beach. The ... read more

If you really want to find freedom and adventure and sexiness and that kind of thing, you can get it in all in one place with the ultimate ticket to cool: a motorcycle. (I guess what we had was a motor scooter, but that still counts, right?) I had the keys to magic in Sihanoukville. I also had some of the lyrics to Seppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild" stuck in my head. It was these ones: "Get your motor runnin' Head out on the highway Lookin' for adventure And whatever comes our way Yeah Darlin' go make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into space" And these too: "Like a true nature's child We were born, born to be wild We can climb so ... read more

The busses in Cambodia are actually quite comfortable. The landscape is similar to the Canadian praries, so the roads are straight. And believe it or not the drivers aren't suicidal! They're not driving full speed passing 2 trucks going up a hill and around corners. This is great! They're even air conditioned.......sort of. Getting off the bus we ignored the guy with the sign with out name on it and got on another motorcycle. We stopped off at the Vietnam consulate to get our Visa, got ripped off (overcharged), not much we can do about it. Then headed to the beach! It's a stereotypical tropical paradise beach with white sand and turquiose waters. The sun drops down over the ocean for perfect sunsets that you only see on postcards. I must admit I get bored pretty ... read more

Hi Sorry for the dreary last blog, but it had to be done! Now onto some lighteer entertainment! Took the bus down to Sihanoukville (called after a Cambodian King) which took about 5 hours ish. Nearly had a punch up the 'host' on the bus who insisted on playing dogy Asian pop music, followed by even dodgier 'neighbours' type soap opera FULL BLAST all the way there! Couldn't hear my i-pod! Told him to turn it down about 10 times and he would make like he was doing it, ut it made NO DIFFERENCE to the volume!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyhow, it was all worth it. Found the Makara Hotel with air con and 2 double beds and only got charged about 6 pounds a night (bargain!!). The beaches were endless adn the people were so friendly, so much ... read more

Hi, Liz here. I know this is going to sound a little hard to believe but it has been AGES since Tom and I were on the beach so we decided that it was time to head south and adopt the position. The town of Sihanoukville was built in the 1960s and named after the king of Cambodia. King Sihanouk is a bit of a character, as well as having a turbulent political and public life he has written and produced several films often recruiting government ministers to appear in them or giving himself leading roles. Best of all he organized two Cambodian film festivals in 1968 and 1969 and awarded himself the grand prize on both occasions. We are thinking of organizing a 'Backpacker of the Year; competition, with the first prize going to myself ... read more

i met a couple of scottish sisters on the beach. one paid $5 U.S. for a small trinket a kid was hawking. the next day, i happened to be bicycling in a far less touristy part of town. a small boy offered me the same trinket for 3000 riel (he started to say 2000 riel but changed mid word to 3000R). a little girl with him, corrected him by saying no it IS 2000R. so far i haven't opened my mouth. i wasn't interested, but they persisted. then i was offered two for the low price of 3000riel. i said ok and pulled out a 10,000, the smallest i had, bill. the kid didn't have any change. i said sorry and started to bike away. he said "ok, you can have both for 2000riel", which i ... read more
