Stop 3 - Belgrade

Now, I know that Belgrade is not the most obvious of holiday destinations, but it is certainly a happening place with friendly people and upbeat nightlife and lots and lots of cafes. Apart from the lovely atmosphere of the place, one of the best things about being there is the sense of being well and truly off the beaten track, something I've never felt before not even in the middle of nowhere in Laos or India. I guess that most people think 'Belgrade, that's in Serbia, there was a war there' and quickly write it off as a no go zone. There just aren't any tourist restaurants or cafes here mainly because there aren't enough tourists to sustain them. This means that when you go into a cafe you know that it's the real deal where ... read more

Hello! We arrived in Budapest via a three hour train from Vienna. Its a good way to travel in these parts as you get to see the countryside go past. Budapest seems like a very nice hip kind of happening place with lots of young funky people about. It is noticeably not as wealthy as Vienna and has lots of slightly crumbling and faded baroque and art nouveau buildings which gives it lots of characters. We stayed in a very friendly hostel, Ginkgo, which is hidden in an apartment block so it took a while to find. On arrival we were given some information on things happening in the city and discovered that one of the clubs, the Godoro Klub, had a Roma music festival on so we went to check it out. It,s (I know ... read more

Stop 1 - Vienna

Stop 1 - Vienna The one plan I had for Vienna was to eat cake, and eat cake I did! Big chocolaty chocolate cake...and ice cream. When in Vienna one really must, honest. The first thing that struck me about Vienna is the size of everything. Every building seems hugely over sized and the space between some of them seems vast in the urban setting. The architecture's is generally very grand baroque style with statues and curly bits in every possible place. I was so pleased that my GCSE German wasn't a total waste of time. I actually managed to fairly confidently, and probably very badly, speak German to people. They all seemed to speak perfect English but appreciated us trying. On day one we were up early to go to the Spanish Riding School. This ... read more

With the realities of full time work holidays are a time to wind down and, kick back and relax on a beach for two weeks in the sun. surely. I mean, that's what any normal, sensible, responsible person would do. But not us, oh no. For our two week nice relaxing holiday we decided to backpack from Vienna (Austria) to Istanbul (Turkey) with our trusted travel buddy Rachael, taking in Budapest (Hungary), Belgrade (Serbia) and Sofia (Bulgaria) on the way. All in just over two weeks. Jen... read more

Hello everyone. My adventure is now over, or at least my Asian adventure. I arrived home in York just over a week ago and have been busy ever since. We got home fine after arising at 4:30 am in Mumbai, getting a taxi to the airport, flying for 2 hours to Dubai, waiting for 2 hours then flying for 8 hours to Manchester where we are picked up by Sam’s mum and I was by 9:30 pm. This blog is by way of a conclusion and look back at the last six months. Firstly, thank you all for reading (more people seem to have read these than I thought) and I hope you haven’t found them to boring. The last six months have been a hell of an adventure and one that I wouldn’t have missed ... read more

Ok, so i know i've been really rubbish with my blog for a while but i fully intend to catch up in the next few days. Since i last blogged i've been in Hampi, Ragasthan, Agra, Dehli, Amritsar and now we are in Mcleod Ganj in the Himilayas. Firstly, it's bloody clod here. It snowed the other day and is not far off freezing. That might not sound bad bu t consider the fact that there is not heating here so it is also about freezinf inside the bedroom. So you lot can have a turn at laughing at me! Luckily we had picked up yak wool jumpers in Dehli and the first thing i did here was head out for wooly hat, gloves and socks, which help. I am currently wearing almost all the clothes ... read more

Dispite all the bad things we had heard about it we decided to throw caution to the winds and stay in Agra for the night. It turned out not to bed as bad as everyone says at all and we managed to eat without being poisoned (there was a horrible scam that involved poisoning people, rushing them to a phoney Dr who continued to poison them and claim their travel insurance, but it seems to have died out). Our hotel had a roof top view of the Taj Mahal too. We arose at 5:45 am in order to get to the Taj for sunrise. When we got there is was still pretty dark and the Taj was a dark blue colour. Now most people stay right by the gate to take photos as the sun come ... read more

So, from Goa we headed up to Hampi. Train was very late but we just managed to get a guest house in Hampi before everything closed. Hampi is actaully really small, just a few tiny streets, which is nice. It's a very chilled out place with lots of roof top cafes and amazing scenery. We went to Hampi for the ruins of ancient Hindu templed and palace. It really is an awsome place. The whole landscape is covered in huge boulders. You kind of have to see it to belive it (photos will apear soon). It looks just like a load of giants have just picked up the boulders and thrwn them around a lot. We did spend a long time speculating as to how some of the boulders got to where they are (e.g. on ... read more

Hello people. So, off we went from Kochi to Goa. The overnight train was pretty good except that it arrived at our destination at 5 am and that we realised when we had to get off a little to late so had to jump off as the train statred to move. We were all uninjured but three other backpacker all fell over. Now arriving at 5 am might sound bad but we soon got a tuk tuk to the beach at Palolem, found a disused lifegaurds plaform and sat on it until the sun came up. This was actually really quite fun. Palolem is beautiful. A stretch of white sand ( about 10mins walk form end to end) in a seltered bay with palm trees all the way along the beach as well as beach huts ... read more
