i met a couple of scottish sisters on the beach. one paid $5 U.S. for a small trinket a kid was hawking.
the next day, i happened to be bicycling in a far less touristy part of town. a small boy offered me the same trinket for 3000 riel (he started to say 2000 riel but changed mid word to 3000R). a little girl with him, corrected him by saying no it IS 2000R. so far i haven't opened my mouth.
i wasn't interested, but they persisted. then i was offered two for the low price of 3000riel. i said ok and pulled out a 10,000, the smallest i had, bill. the kid didn't have any change. i said sorry and started to bike away. he said "ok, you can have both for 2000riel", which i did have.
so, i paid 25 cents for the same item she paid $5 for.
