Trixie, Ryan, and ITrixie, Ryan, and ITrixie, Ryan, and I

On our road trip to Stone Hut.
"Why Adelaide?" I keep getting asked. Well, I have a close friend who settled in Adelaide, and more recently another friend moved there as well, so I went there spend time with them, immerse myself in the place, and eat good food.

I arrived in Adelaide on Tuesday, August 22, and stayed six days with my former co-worker Trixie and her husband Charles. I also spent time with my friend Ryan who moved there a few years ago. This was my third visit in eight years to Adelaide, so I wasn't there to see things so much as to just be there. During my time there, I ate myself silly, and went on lots of walks and hikes. Here are some of the things I did and saw.

River Torrens Linear Park

I did this hike while my friends were at work. This was a long hike from the center of Adelaide to Henley Beach on a trail alongside the Torrens River. It starts out in downtown Adelaide and goes on for about 9.7 miles before it reaches the coastline. To be honest, the hike got boring after a few miles, but I persevered because I knew the

coastline would be very pretty. Along the way, I watched people, enjoyed the landscape, listened to birds, got dived bombed by a magpie (probably because I was close to its nest), and admired the flowers, birds, dogs and horses I encountered.

The trail went generally in a westward direction. When I hit the coastline at Henley Beach, I turned south towards Glenelg. While the coastline was pretty, I was a bit demoralized by this point as I was hungry and there weren't any food places in sight; just block upon block of beachfront residences. The first food place I encountered was 1.1 miles down. Stopping at the restaurant for lunch, I scarfed down a focaccia and smoothie as soon as it was presented to me. After eating, I walked a further 3.5 miles to Glenelg where I took a tram back to Adelaide.

Feel free to view my pre-lunch hike stats here, and my post-lunch hike stats here.

Morialta Falls

Trixie and I did this hike. There are three spectacular waterfalls at this trail system. We saw two of the three, as well as a cave, and some pretty scenery. The route we took was 4.16

miles. Feel free to view my hike stats here.

Road Trip Up North

Trixie, Charles, Ryan and I drove more than 200km up north to Stone Hut for their famous pies. The rapeseeds (better known as canola) were in bloom so there were pretty yellow fields throughout our drive. We also drove through wine country.

Friends, Food, and Hanging Out

The rest of my time was spent hanging out with friends, having lots of good food (both at restaurants and home cooked), and dog walking. Notable places and items we ate included:

• Peel St, a farm-to-table restaurant. I especially liked their smoked ocean trout salad and a soupy dish with snapper, mussels and Goolwa pipi (clams).
• Nishiki, a Japanese izakaya. Their eihire (sting ray) was the big surprise of the meal.
• Ricky's Malaysian Kitchen, for Hainanese chicken rice.
• Good Pho U. I could forgive their hokey name because their egg noodles were great.
• Breakfast at an Italian deli.
• Trixie's baked snapper infused with lemon and herbs.

The quality of ingredients in Australia is so good that it is difficult to have a bad meal there. I rarely eat meat in

the US because the pork and chicken there taste and smell weird to me (probably because they are fed hormones and antibiotics) so the quality of the ingredients was a big treat for me. Funnily enough, the one item I went crazy over was bacon. I can't stand bacon in the US, especially how it is prepared there (burnt to a crisp). It was such a treat to have good bacon.

Other places I visited and things I did included:

• Dog walking. Both Trixie and Ryan have dogs, and dogs seem to love me.
• Stirling and Hahndorf. Ryan and I drove to these two towns in the hills around Adelaide to eat and just walk around.
• Semaphore, a pleasant seaside town north of Henley Beach.
• Gawler, where Ryan lives.
• Torrens Island and Port Adelaide. Torrens Island has a boardwalk, and we saw a dolphin from there.

One of two fancy public toilets I encountered on the route. They had automatic doors, automatic flush (it happens when you wash your hands), and piped music... and...

The bridge in the distance marks the end point of the trail. From there, I turned left and walked another 4.5 miles to Glenelg.

Chilling, Hiking and Eating
Sounds like a wonderful time spent in Adelaide - enjoyable activities all around! I totally get you on the bacon in the USA - burnt to a crisp, not sure why...?! Great photos too :)
