Arrived here in Valdez before noon as we didn't have very far to go. The drive was beautiful. This area reminds me a little of the Hawaiian islands except there are glaciers on the mountains instead of Palm trees. It is extremely green but the vegetation is almost tropical looking. There are no pine trees or spruce trees like in other parts of Alaska.
We are staying at Bayside RV park and it is your typical Alaska RV park in that it is a gravel lot. It isn't as big as the other park across the street so it makes it feel a little homier, if that is even a word. There is another place that is nicer, smaller and right on the water but it would have been a little tight for us. This worked out fine because we are in the front row and have a nice view of the waterfowl habitat area. The first night we were here after we finished setting everything up Don noticed a bear walking in the open area. Then along came 2 more. It turned out to be a momma and her 2, I would say "teen" Cubs, and they put on
Worthington Glacier
Worthington Glacier from the road as you are coming into Valdez. quite the show. The Cubs had a little sparing match, as siblings do, and the mom just sat back on her hind legs and watched. It was funny. I got some great pictures. Then a while later after dinner a coyote came out and we watched him hunt for dinner. Very entertaining area.
Don was scheduled to go fishing on Thursday but the seas turned rough so his charter cancelled. BUMMER!? But we would rather him be safe than risk it. They have plenty of halibut to buy here and it is fresh so we are just going to bring halibut home that way instead. He just won't have the thrill of catching it himself. I thought he would be more bummed about it than he is, but he said that he has been many times before so it really isn't a big deal. Such a good sport! ?
We had schedule to do a helicopter glacier flight on Saturday but they called on Thursday and asked if we would like to go that day seeing as the weather was perfect for flying and sightseeing. We of course didn't hesitate to say yes and off we went. It
was a trip of a lifetime. Words and pictures do not do it justice. It is someone that we will never forget. Definitely a bucket list✔️.
We have been relaxing here the past few days in Valdez as it is a quaint little town kind of like Morro Bay but on a much smaller scale. There are tiny shops and a few restaurants and we are surrounded by mountains and water. It is beautiful. There are no crowds of cruise ships or busses. It is quiet and nice. Most of the people who come here come to fish. We will leave here on Tuesday gearing up for the long grueling drive home as the roads from here are not good. There also has been a bad fire in Canada and the road that we need to travel on has been closed for over a week now. We have been watching the BC Highway website keeping an eye on it as we may have to take an alternate route which would suck because it would add a lot of time to our trip. Let's hope it gets under control soon.
I hope you enjoy the pictures. There are a
Bridal Veil Falls
Alaska's version......? lot because this place is so beautiful I couldn't stop taking pictures! I have plenty more that I didn't post too! Stay cool and we'll talk soon! ?
