So after an early start (made earlier by a Rory who was too excited to play with children to sleep), we headed to the airport. Brilliant journey and parked up and got through to departure lounge. After a much needed caffeine fix we got on the plane and arrived in Barcelona.
We navigated our way to shuttle bus to take us into the city centre. Which gave us a little scenic route on the way. Before we could start exploring we needed to get rid of the luggage. We found the hotel with ease ( it's really nice - just what we need) and luckily our room was ready so we could freshen up and re-examine outfits for the Spanish sun.
Now we were fully ready to explore this beautiful city. We took a stroll down to the harbour and daydreamed about the super yachts that were parked up. They were massive!! We then took a slow walk along the waterfront till we got to a lovely park. After a strenuous climb up the steps we made it to a peak and this gave us amazing views over the city. We decided to make a quick pit stop for a
cold drink and ice cream.
After a refuel we headed onto the site of the 92 Olympic park. The stadium is open so you can go inside to look around. This was really cool and in pretty good nick. They still use it for the odd event and it can be hired for events. We walked around the outside and got to the park section which was set with lovely fountains and was edged by a former arena and the swimming pool (both utilised still). The area itself was popular with the locals and lots of dogs - none as beautiful as Rory though. There was a tall former telecommunications tower which was a lovely sculpture.
We then wandered down the hill and spotted places which we had on list to explore tomorrow. But we sat in the Placa d'Espanya and people watched for a while before heading along the road and stopping for a quick coffee. After this treat we walked into the Placa Catalunya which is at the top of the La Rambla which is the main strip in Barcelona. The square itself had some beautiful illuminated water fountains.
We took a walk down the Rambla before spotting a NBA cafe which look inviting and certainly different. So we headed in for a drink and some dinner. This was a basketball cafe and they had screen with a game on and there was a lot of passionate fans in there. To be honest, we weren't sure what was happening a lot of the time - it was in Spanish after all. However we grasped enough to become temporary fans and be enthralled into the final exciting last moments.
As it had been a long day and we needed all the energy we could get for the exertions of tomorrow we headed to bed for an early night.
