One moment – an apology.
I was looking at previous posts & have realised that I said that Peter from Holland was a prison warden; my mistake, in fact he was a prison GOVERNOR – Peter, I am very sorry; (everything else was correct – great cook, great artist & lover so Janette tells me; now we'll see if they're reading this!) A bit like when I asked the Marketing Director which territory he covered back in '77...
Righto, off we go, but first to the shop for supplies to Kipa, part of Tesco (or as their FD was, 'stitched up like a Kipa') Met a German couple in a converted Merc van – raised, converted to 4x4 with a large living 'box' & painted in an earth & sky camo design. I told him that Poland was the other way & he actually laughed...briefly
Quite a short trip to the site right beneath the gorge - & boy it is pretty dramatic. It's the second largest gorge in Europe according to a website off Google which is strange as some would say we are in the Middle East & others Asia...The cliff faces either side of the
gorge rise 300m & the gorge is a slice out of the rocks at 20km long. Tomorrow we shall pay our 6ytl & go into the gorge – but only about 250m which is a shame. But last last year, 2 people died & about 20 injured when a flash flood just obliterated them – so now when the water level is high, then they close it off. Just for once, H & S I agree with, especially after the rain over the last few days.
The river quickly flowing down is silver grey with silt – the people here run rafting trips with 'free' mud baths & there are plenty of takers. They come from all the resorts along the coast as day trips & the outdoor restaurant is obviously large but tonight Mathew it will be, in all likelihood, all ours according to our host ?Asheed. He has dual nationality, Dutch & Turkish & lived in Eindhoven for 25 years - has a look of a young Elvis about him a huh huh. He goes off with his mates to international football matches & once paid 1250 Euros for some top match in the UK – did he
say MU & Liverpool? I said I could have a lot more fun with that money, still have change & my clothes on. Nice chap, multi lingual & no doubt wasted here though he clearly enjoys himself. He showed us one of their guest tree houses – really nice if you want a lonesome pine between you & the stairs.
Billy the Bosch is doing very well having passed the 3000 trip mile mark yesterday but the fridge has been playing up over the last couple of days. Well, as it turns out, not the fridge...Googled the issue & it cuts off the mains supply if the voltage drops more than 10% from optimal of 240v. They run on 220v in Turkey but I think in the outback it drops below 220v occasionally / frequently...so, we're running on gas & hopefully it doesn't run out before we can get another bottle. I was hoping to avoid this – can't exchange our UK bottle over here, hey ho. Not a show stopper.
Executive decision – we'll go up the Kyber Pass (ooh Matron) tomorrow morning & move on as we can't use the bikes as the roads are too
steep & you can't walk as the mountains are, well, vertical. It's a real shame as it is staggeringly beautiful & breathtaking.
A 'site lady' put some washing on for us, but the machine wouldn't work so she put it in hers which was very kind especially as there is no charge. The sites in Turkey are very, very basic but very cheap. This site is 30 YTL (c.£7.50) per night all in ie electric, hot showers 24/7, wifi (if you ask nicely) & as it turns out, washing machines! Oh,& the pool but it's a bit murky so haven't used it.
Off for dinner now & my wifi...we both hope you enjoy the blog...X
