Packing bags ready for airline departure is never fun but hey it's a necessity. Being in the cold weather means we have so much more bulk to pack. Most of this will now be put away as we head to the warmer weather of Florida. What a great time we have had here in NYC - quite relaxed - as we have already seen a lot of the "must do's" therefore we didn't have the usual running around first timers have.
This morning we said goodbye to Rick - promising to return in the summer of 2016. We caught a private taxi service to la Guardia airport - around 9 miles away from Harlem. Rick told us about the private taxi service and how it works. Unlike the yellow taxi cabs the private service is just that - private. You negotiate a fixed price when you get in the taxi and no tipping required. Price from Harlem to La Guardia was $40 including tolls. Payment is by cash. Another great insider tip! The flight to Fort Lauderdale was with JetBlue airlines - one way $144 each.
First time flying with JetBlue but I think we will make them a favourite.
Here's why- first bag flies free, second bag $40 - great leg room in economy - free in flight wi-fi - free snacks and drinks - and free movies...what a great airline - take off time was 30minutes late due to a mechanical fault but we still arrived on time in Fort Lauderdale.
As soon as we got off the plane we felt the sun's warmth on our faces. We were still dressed in our winter woolies and boy did we feel the difference. Even though we loved the cold weather we experienced up North, the warmth was a super nice feel too. We were so glad to take off our wool socks and winter boots and replace them with a pair of thongs (flip flops or jandles depending where you live).
Took a free shuttle bus to the airport rental area and picked up our rental car from Alamo. We have a full size Hyundai Sonata - just under $300 for 10 days.
We have rented a rental vacation house in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdalefor the next 5 nights for just under $500. The place is absolutely gorgeous. The owner lives in the detached home next door
and our home is fully self contained with everything we could Possibly need including a pool.. This is a highly recommended trip advisor vacation rental and it certainly didn't disappoint.
Since we have a self contained place we headed to the local supermarket - Publix - where we picked up food for the next few days. It was a great supermarket with loads of fresh foods, reasonable prices and has a good range of anything you might need.
Back at home and Geoff put together a great fresh salad accompanied with streaky bacon - so delicious.
The sun went down later than up North at around 5.45pm. We are so looking forward to exploring the area over the coming days And maybe a swim or two in the pool too
Life is good!

Great planning to vacation in florida after NYC although they are having some cool temps this year. Sounds like you found a great place to stay. Eager to hear what you do....or do nothing.
