Leaping down the streets of Antigua We had to get up really early this morning...like in the 4's to catch the 5.04am train to Newark Airport. We said our goodbyes to Susan who dropped us off at the train station, what an absolute trooper after driving us around the East Coast of the states all week!
We made it through the longest security process in history at Newark Airport including having one of those crazy xrays where you have to stand like a teepee. After a quick bite for breakfast (including a sampler at Aunty Anne's pretzels...Rach couldn't buy a full one because she ate too much breaky and wasn't hungry!!) we hopped on our United Airlines flight down to Guatemala City.
The flight went pretty quickly and 5 hours later we landed. We had a pretty good run through the airport and before we knew it, we'd found a $10ea transfer to Antiqua (we'd looked online first and thought the cheapest option was $15ea so we thought we got a pretty good deal).
The drive took us out of the busy streets of Guatamala City and into the mountains. The weather was extremely sticky and warm with high threatening storm clouds, we'd entered
the Tropics!! We knew we had arrived into Antiqua because the road went to bumpy cobble stones, enough to rattle your teeth out on our little bus. From our little trip through the town, we knew we'd like Antiqua. With its cobble streets, colourful houses all with a backdrop and mountains and one giant volcano (which really only showed itself every now and then however was most of the time covered by clouds).
We checked into our hotel called Los Bucaros and were surprised at how homely it was. It had a lovely outdoor patio area and all the comforts we'd need (including filtered water and wifi!).
We ventured out to explore the city on foot, knowing that if we'd stop we'd soon loose energy after our early morning start. First on the agenda was getting some food given we hadn't really eaten since 6am breaky and it was already pushing 2pm (or 4pm US time that we were still on!). We found a little burrito place and sat outside (sort of in the sun, Rach had to move her chair and straighten her legs to get the sun). We both went for fajita-things with limonada (I managed
to be able to translate this one into lemonade!). Rach didn't like her drink which came in a massive goblet so I proceeded to have 2 drinks which equated to about 1.5L of lemonade!
We wondered around the town briefly before heading back home. We thought given our spare day tomorrow that we'd see the rest of the city then and headed home to rest. We both thought we'd just have a quick nap but before we knew it, it was 9pm having slept for about 4 hours! We brushed our teeth and went straight back to bed. Probably a combination of jetlag and exhaustion from our go-go-go trip so far but had the best sleep in a long time!!

Antigua
Hi you two. Thankx for the update - you are doing so well with your communications. Did you weigh yourselves before leaving Scotland? After reading your blogs and hearing about all the food you have eaten you must be several kilos heavier by now. Rachel I did not know you had such a love of food!! You are more like Gramps than I realised. We got a travel book out of library on Central America so have been reading about the places you are visiting and have you well tracked on the map. Lots of luv to you both, Nanny
