Curry Hammock, Dear Friends and Softball

We drove down the Keys on Saturday morning, arriving at Curry Hammock State Park north of Marathon around lunch time. The weather is glorious, sunny and warm, with a nice breeze. We set up our camper and walked down to the beach. The tide was out and the water looked beautiful. We sat in the shade and enjoyed our view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Our friends, Laurie and John, from Washington state, who we met on the Tennessee River several years ago, were in town and came by the campground to visit. We sat at the beach and enjoyed some cool and tasty beverages before heading to Keys Fisheries for supper. Good food there and good company, too, as we caught up on each others' lives. After eating, we went to Boot Key Harbor to show them where we spent most of last winter. It was obvious to all of us that we miss being there. Maybe next year.

Sunday afternoon Kerry played softball, something he had looked forward to since last March when we left Boot Key. It was good to see some familiar faces as well as some new ones. Kerry did pretty well playing ball after 10 months, although he says he played badly. He did have a bit of a tumble running from second to third, (no, Kerry, the shortstop did not trip you.) He ended up with a bruised and puffy knee and a couple of minor strawberries. Cindy and Alex, from upstate New York, who we had gotten to know last year, invited us to their place for supper. They are renting a nice place on a canal in Marathon and we sat outside enjoying the weather before going inside to eat. We had a great evening with them, laughing and sharing funny stories.

Today (Monday) we moved to a different campsite, still in Curry Hammock. These state park campgrounds in the Keys fill up as soon as reservations become available, which is 11 months in advance. We watch the reservations sites and grab spots when there are cancellations. Thus we were able to get 2 days here, then later another 2 days, but for different campsites. Wednesday we will head to Bahia Honda for 3 days. We would love to get 2 more days at either park for next weekend.

We went to the Winn Dixie to do a little grocery shopping, had just about finished, when they evacuated the store. Apparently someone ran into their gas tank, and the parking lot soon was filled with fire trucks, fire and rescue vans and police cars. So we just went on down to the Publix and did our shopping. The emergency vehicles were still there when we came back by. Oh the excitement.

These clouds were over the Atlantic, but we could see 2 of these funnel clouds dipping down. They never reached all the way to the ocean. We were watching from the ball field.

There were three of them out there this morning. It's amazing how fast they go.
