Big Waves
Lots of crashing waves at St. Joseph Peninsula SP Monday, 9 January, 2011
Monday morning we checked the water lines, finding no leak. Kerry and I both had tightened a fitting the night before and that apparently took care of it. We arrived in DeFuniak Springs around 2, and went to cousins Cathy and Bill’s house for a visit. Cousins Gena and Bob, along with Bob’s sister, Vivian, came later and we all went to Mossy Oaks to That Pizza Place for the world’s best pizza. It never disappoints. Afterwards, we stopped to visit with Aunt Patty for a little while, finding her pretty perky and recovering from bronchitis. After a quick hello to Bob’s mother, Marion, we headed back to Bob and Gena’s to watch the BCS game on TV. We got to discussing our upcoming trip to the west coast and the difficulty in getting camping spots in Yosemite. We checked availability and found a couple of spots that fit within a doable time frame and made reservations. So now we have a loose schedule for the early part of that trip.

After a delicious breakfast, we got on the road again. Bob and Gena had planned to go with us to

At St. Joseph Peninsula SP St. Joseph Peninsula SP, but the weather called for 100% chance of rain, up to 2” overnight with thunderstorms. Since they could only stay for one night due to other obligations, it was decided they’d meet us there on our way back north. We picked up a few groceries on the way out of DFS, and drove to the coast then east on US 98. The skies were cloudy but rain was not yet here. We got to the park and managed to set up the camper in a light drizzle. The rain got a bit heavier as the afternoon and evening wore on, but nothing severe and nothing close to 2” of rain. It was too rainy to go down to the beach, but we can hear the surf pounding and the wind in the tops of the trees from our camper. Overnight there was some thunder and a little lightning, but it passed on by before morning.

The rain stopped, but the wind changed direction and was quite strong all day. We did go down to the beach and watched the waves crashing on the beach. It was a pretty sight, but we

at St. Joseph. See the dunes, the Gulf of Mexico is just beyond were glad not to be on a boat out there. It was a most pleasant day, we walked around some, we relaxed in the camper, and Kerry spent time on the phone with Verizon trying to figure out why our air card was telling us we were on global roaming and that it could cost us up to $20 per mb to use it. We think it is finally straightened out, but we’ll see. We spent the evening quietly, reading, surfing the web, and playing computer games.

The wind has calmed considerably and the sun is shining. We walked on the beach after breakfast and the surf, while still rough, is not near as wild as it was yesterday. Washed up on the beach were tiny Portuguese Man-O-War, some as small as the tip of your little finger, a few nearly fist-sized. There were a couple of moon jellies washed ashore also. There were several people on the beach today, a couple were surf fishing while others were just strolling and seeing what the waves had washed up.
