Monday, 9 January, 2011 Monday morning we checked the water lines, finding no leak. Kerry and I both had tightened a fitting the night before and that apparently took care of it. We arrived in DeFuniak Springs around 2, and went to cousins Cathy and Bill’s house for a visit. Cousins Gena and Bob, along with Bob’s sister, Vivian, came later and we all went to Mossy Oaks to That Pizza Place for the world’s best pizza. It never disappoints. Afterwards, we stopped to visit with Aunt Patty for a little while, finding her pretty perky and recovering from bronchitis. After a quick hello to Bob’s mother, Marion, we headed back to Bob and Gena’s to watch the BCS game on TV. We got to discussing our upcoming trip to the west coast and the difficulty ... read more

February 3, 2010, Wednesday, St. George Island SP to St. Joseph’s Peninsula SP On our way to St. Joseph’s, we thought we would stop at St. Vincent’s National Wildlife Refuge. We didn’t know it was an island and the private shuttle boat did not seem available? So on we go out on the peninsula to St. Joseph SP, a sweeping landscape of towering dunes and wilderness. We walked on the beach for a while and began to look for a sign to the Wilderness Preserve. The dunes are protected, but we found the designated trail from the beach and began to walk… and walk… and walk. Of course, the map and other information is “home” in the RV. I heard the refrain …“Forced Death March” again and tried to ignore it. We eventually found cabins and ... read more

So we're back at wonderful St. Joseph Peninsula SP. The campsites are very sheltered here, but close to the beach. We walked on the beach yesterday after getting the camper set up, and picked up a few shells. Last night the weather moved in, as expected. We could hear the wind howling and the thunder booming. Rain on the camper is very loud. But we were cozy as could be, didn't even turn on our heater, as it was in the 60's all night. We can hear the surf pounding from the camper. This morning is gray and windy, the temp is dropping slowly, and the sea is wild and dirty looking, totally different from yesterday. We stopped by the Cape Blas lighthouse and took a few pictures on our way into Port St. Joe to ... read more

We left Josh’s house after he and Jen went to work early on Wednesday morning. Our plan was to drive to the Gulf coast near Apalachicola and arrive in the afternoon. We headed up to US-90 which parallels I-10. (Have you noticed that east-west US routes start with the low numbers in the north, while the Interstates start with the low numbers in the south. We used to take US-20 going east from Cleveland to NH instead of taking I-90. Now we were taking US-90 instead of I-10.) The old US routes do go through some small towns, but there is very little traffic and it was 4 lanes. We set the cruise at 55 and enjoyed our drive. Taking the by-ways has some real advantages: less stress, more gas stations, more variety of places to ... read more

Sometimes there are pleasant surprises when traveling. Such as a family vacation. When you're just a kid, the family vacation is fun. Sure, you argue heaps with your siblings, and your parents yell at you for asking the dreaded 4-word question, Are we there yet?. But generally a family vacation is fun when you're a kid. Fast forward a few years. Ok, maybe a few more. You haven't fully lived with your family for several years. You've traveled extensively on your own and have pretty much declared your independence from being cooped up in the back seat of the car with your annoying siblings. You've had a few road trips of your own. You get along with your family, but that's mostly because you don't spend much time at "home". Now why on earth would you ... read more

Sometimes the travel part is the fun part, especially when we get off the interstate. Last year, we made a similar trip from Ocala to Florida's Panhandle; this year we got off I-10 much sooner - at Tallahassee. The result - a far more interesting trip taking the old road and the long way. First of all, Tallahassee is a beautiful State Capital. The "Old Capitol Building" is lovely - it even has red and white striped awnings on all the windows. The downtown looked prosperous. The suburbs were abloom with wisteria, dogwood, azalia and spring wild flowers (March 26). No photos as we were "motoring" but this would be a nice stop on a future trip. We headed for the Panhandle beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. We knew we were in hurricane country because ... read more
