Woke at our Jungle shack at 7am, the boys were still up from the night before, they'd been back to the shop numerous times to stock up on Red Bull. Rang Ant, it was just gone midnight back home so he'd just seen in the New Year. Some wild dogs nearby were chasing a Waterbuffalo around that was chained up, didn't like that. Decided to head off to Ko Samui so we packed up and arranged for a taxi to take us to the Port at Thong Sala. I'm finding living out of a suitcase no problem at all, and was excited to be off on our travels again.
We drove past some birds in cages hung outside shop windows, apparently they're welded in the cages with no way of getting out which upset me as they're in the direct sunlight. But that's the only animal cruelty we've seen so far (I'd kind of prepared myself to see some terrible things, so it's a relief).
Got a sandwhich at the port, it was heaving - full of people still covered in bodypaint and looking rough from the night before. It was midday and the sun was at it's hottest, this made us all feel a bot ropey. Tom was cowering under his towel and only surfaced when it was time to walk to the boat. We managed to get seats in the VIP area again and all had a nap.
Got to Ko Samui an hour later, and decided to go to Chaweng, where Tom spent a lot of time in the Summer. Our taxi driver was lovely and helped me get accross a busy road to buy some water. He also gave us advice on where to try for accommodation. We tried a couple of places but Tom offered to go find hostels while we sat in a cafe with all the bags - Nice one! He came back about an hour later bright pink and covered in sweat bless him. Him & Coats were in a nice hotel, but it cost them 18,500THB each (nearly 40pounds) and Ellie and I were in a hostel for only 300THB each (6quid) as we're on a tight budget. We hadn't planned for Thailand to be so expensive - we both blew nearly half of our weeks budget in the first night in Bangkok (80, out of 200pounds). For example, we've been drinking lots of fruit shakes which cost 2quid in most places, thats not much different to home!
Our hostel (called The Loft) is totally brilliant! There's 3 bunkbeds in a room, and it's spotless with bright white linen & towels. Tom went to meet the girl he was dating here in the summer and me El & Coatsy went out for dinner, the foodwas ok, but not as good as everywhere else we've eaten at. Ko Samui is so lovely, the shops, hotels & bars are quite posh, which is quite a contrast to Koh Phangan. Ellie & I spent some time on the tinternet then the 3 of us went back out for a bit of shopping then some drinks at Dukes which played live music. Decided to have a detox day (Ko Samui is the perfect place to detox) so I opted for a non-alcoholic Strawberry Daquari. Phoned Ant then went back to the hostel with El. We're sharing the room with a couple of people but they were quiet when they came in so we both slept really well.
