It's hard to see how big this tree is, but it is truly amazing!
It seems like it's been a long time since my last blog update. Well, I've been very busy enjoying not being at the hostel. I had the opportunity to house sit at a co-workers and I jumped at the chance of being alone, with peace and quiet and my own tv to enjoy. I happened to feel the need one day last week to feed the little pig that is on the property (probably next Christmas dinner or something). After finding my way around the electric fences safely, I was making my way back to the house. I then stumbled upon a most unfamiliar sight. The leg of some poor animal. I had no idea, and had no inclination to stick around to find out what animal it belonged to, so I bolted back to the house. Turns out that my co-worker Pam wanted me to go back and take a picture of it so she could tell me what it was. Well, all I knew was that it was a dead leg, and didn't want to go back to take a picture. Seems it belonged to some poor sheep, and since there was no good eating on that part of

the leg, it was left for the possums to devour.

Well, I have some nice pictures to share with you all.
I decided to drive to the West Coast a couple of weekends ago, since I've already gone as far north as possible, seems the most logical course of action.

Hokianga Harbour was great, I basically drove through and decided to stop on the way back because it was such a hot day. I then went up into the big hills boarder the coast to see a big, big, big tree.
Tane Mahuta, the god of the Forest . In Maori Cosmology, Tane is the sun of Ranginui the sky father and Papatuanuka the earth Mother. Tane tore his parents apart, breaking their primal embrace, to bring light, space and air allowing life to flourish.

Tane Mahuta is the oldest Kauri tree in New Zealand and is said to be as old as 2000 years old. You can't get too close to the tree because treading on the ground can kill the tree because of it's roots that are close to the surface. It really is an amazing thing to feel so small. It's like being on

a plane and seeing cars that remind you of ants. You feel so small and minute when it comes to this beast of a tree. It takes over 13 people to wrap their arms outstretched around this tree.

It was so cool in the forest near Tane, that I ended up spending about a half and hour just staring up at it, in awe. Maybe I'm wierd (yeah, no comments from the peanut gallery) but I wanted to get closer, to touch this magnificent tree. To hug it in a sense. It was great!
