Edit Blog Post
I opted to start this blog to see how it worked in the anticipation of finally retiring and taking off for full-timing in our RV. I needed a chance to practice and see how family and friends were able to do accessing the blog and following our adventures. This is our first attempt as we are about to embark on a long awaited vacation.
We are heading out for 2 weeks in Florida and planned originally to take our Suzuki 400cc motorscooter and a couple of bicycles for transportation. But after trying various ways of hanging the bikes, we realized we couldn’t get them on the back of the RV and also put the motorscooter on. We opted for the easier transport in the motorscooter and left the bikes at home.
We left Fredericksburg Thursday and headed out. We hoped to get to South of the Border by dinner time, but got away late. We made it to Lumberton, NC and decided to pull into a Wal-Mart for the night. Pulling into the parking lot, we hit a dip and scrapped the light on the motorcycle carrier, breaking the lens on the right rear…again. Well, at least we could
go into Wal-Mart and buy a replacement.
(Has anyone every thought of creating a web site that rated that various Wal-Marts where RVers spend the night? We’ve stayed at a number and found varying satisfaction. How about rating security, food availability, noise, ease of entry, ease of finding the Wal-Mart, etc.)
We left early the next morning and headed for Hilton Head. We had reservations at the Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort & Marina. It is a great park where you take a golf cart, drive around and find an empty site, and the report back to the office. Because someone owns each site, this prevents any charge of favoritism by the management, since it is the guest who picks the site. The park was great with 2 pools, a hot tub, tennis courts and playgrounds for kids, plenty of places to walk, and an on-site restaurant.
The reason we stopped at Hilton Head instead of going all the way to Jacksonville, FL where our son lives was to stop and see an old high school friend. Nancy (Lease) Williams was a year ahead of me in high school and we have stayed in touch through Christmas
cards over the years. But with all the correspondence, we had never met her husband or son. We drive up and down I-95 all the time and never managed to work in a stop to see her in SC. We made arrangements a number of weeks ago to finally stop and see her. So after settling in to the campground, I called and Nancy came out to pick us up and showed us around Hilton Head. We then went to her house, met her husband and son (who is graduating from HS this year) and had a wonderful dinner together. Nancy and a number of high school friends and I were always very liberal and progressive in high school. After all these years, it was nice to see that Nancy remains committed to causes and improving society. She is Executive Director for Adult Literacy on Hilton Head and continues to work with Planned Parenthood. It’s good to know that people don’t always change for the worse. After bringing each other up to date on families and having a great time chatting, Nancy took us back to the campground and we said a fond farewell.
Saturday we were going to
drive to Jacksonville, meet our son, and spend some time camping and visiting.

Hello Fellow RV'ers
So are you still maintaining this site? We are fellow RV'ers from Fred'burg area. We do Hilton Head and St. Augustine frequently. Have always biked once situated at RV site, but are now considering scooter for around town transport at home. How do you like your scooter? How is transporting scooter? How do you get scooter on/off rack?
