Shark Island
A nice shot just after sun down Welcome to Koh Tao, the most beautiful island I have ever seen!
Koh Tao is the smallest island in the string of Koh's off the South East gulf of Thailand. We were a little worried on the way over to the island because our jetty was filled with ppl all going to the same destination. We chose a small bay on the South East side of the island that had three resorts. Our ride there was very bumpy in the back of a pick-up, since there are very few paved roads on the island. Let me rephrase that, there is a strip of paved road about 1km long. The rest of the island has to be reached by 4x4 truck. Our first destination was Ao Leuk bay. The three resorts turned out to be all small bungallows; the only difference from the high end ones was hot water. The bay was amazing wiht crystal blue water and great snorkeling.
On the first day I decided that I would climb around the point and catch the sunset on the other side of the bay. The hike there was quite difficult and I was happy that it was only me so
I didn't have to listen to anyone tell me what a bad idea this was. I didn't reach the other side to watch the sun set but did snap some nice photos of Shark Island. I decide that the way that I had come was too treacherous to return so I would take the road. After some shady directions and some names I couldn't pronounce I headed off. It was getting dark as I walked down the road and finally got to where i thought I wanted to go. But to no avail the road had no lights and the locals were looking at me like I was crazy. So back up the hill in the pitch dark, only using my camera to take pics of the signs to see where I was. I finally found the road I needed and ended up back at the bungallow at 10pm.
After snorkeling the bay we moved over to the next bay Ao Tanto bay. This place was better than our first place; with a killer view a huge bed and a massive rock to jump off of. We snorkeled around the bay for a few hours seeing the healthiest coral
all trip!
The next day we headed out on a snorkel trip around the entire island. It started with a few bunk spots but picked up after lunch when we got bananas to feed the fish. They went crazy! One even bit my nipple! The bays we passed were breath taking with spectacular rock formations. corye and I pushed the limits of our free diving to 18 meters. I grabbed a handfull of sand at 20 meters and put it in Corey's hand..."Your turn!" I found a sweet shell (that is now stinking up my bag) but it will be worth it when I get it home.
On our last day at our bay I got the courage up to do a gainer off the 45 foot rock. Gainer- a back flip while moving in a forward motion. This was the biggest jump I had done doing this manouver...and it was AWSOME!! THe feeling is amazing. Wish you were there to hit it with me Ben. Sorry no pics, but Corey has a sweet vid for evidence!! LOL All and all it was a relaxing time picking up another coat to the old tan. Phuket is calling our
A long hike
I walked from the far point on the right to miss the sunset names and we took the night boat over to the mainland. We will sepn a few days there diving and chillin on Phi Phi; as well as seeing the beach where The Beach was shot and James Bond Island. Enjoy the pics!
