I went round the world with my family in 2005. We got round the world plane tickets. These tickets allow you to stop a number of times basically as you keep going in one direction around the world. Our tickets were with Star Alliance which includes Air New Zealand, Asiana, Lufthansa, Air Canada, British Midland, etc... Doing it by boat is much slower and a lot more hassle, and ultimately, I would be surprised if it was any cheaper. RTW plane tickets are about $6000 depending on the type you get and you usually have 12 months in which to use them so I think they would be ideal for you.

You need to decide exactly where you want to go and plot a course and then research each of the different RTW tickets to see which is best for you. If you are planning to stay in hostels you will find it easy to meet up and travel with people, in which case you may be fine going alone. If you are going for 12 months you will find that if you travel with someone the whole time you better like them a lot! Good luck. Reply to this

hi ... i am in the middle of planning an around the world trip myself and i totally understand how confused you might be!!! my boyfriend and i got the idea to go on this trip last month ... and deciding to quit our jobs and when to leave and which countries are interesting was the easy part!!! everything else ... its been crazy!!! we haven't had any luck finding a travel agent who can actually help us ... most of the time we hear "oh, um ... you should um, do an around the world ticket, um, it can be researched online, and um, uh ..." it was soooo frusturating!!! when we would find a travel agent who seemed to know at least a little bit about what we hope to do (backpack around the world!!!), they wanted crazy amounts of money just to "research" -- anywhere from $50 to $200 per person -- and that amount wasn't always applicable to our plane tickets if we chose to book through that agent!

sooo out of complete frusturation, we have decided to just do it all ourselves, i have a feeling it will be cheaper this way (we're not paying anyone commission!!). our first step was to get to the library and take out a lonely planet guide for every country we'd like to go to ... that way we can discover what there is to do there. then we set out our itinerary and as much as we wanted to just "go with the flow" and travel wherever we wanted whenever we wanted, we've discovered that several of the countries we're going to require visa's in advance and things such as exact dates of travel and sometimes even where we plan to be staying upon arrival!! as for how to get around, we read about the RTW ticket through wikipedia (great information!!) and checked into the rates with star alliance (the one that has air canada etc) but we're finding that it is probablly going to work out cheaper for us to buy one way tickets as we go. i just went to expedia.ca to find which airline has the cheapest flight, then to that airline and plan to book it directlly with the airline myself. some airlines are in foreign currency so i searched for a currency converter through google and when i add up what star alliance is going to charge us vs what we will pay on our own, it seems to be very comparable. (and the benefit of doing it on our own is that we have more freedom!!).

some websites that have been amazing for helping us plan are:

www.expedia.ca (<--- to search for who has the cheapest flights)

www.visaconnection.com (<--- to find out which countries require a visa ... but DON'T order your visa through them, they're crazy expensive and if you go through the consulate of whichever country you are going to its a fraction of the price!!!)

www.voyage.gc.ca (<--- the canadian gov't website for travel advisory's and additional information about entry/exit requirements, and sometimes consulate info for a particular country)

www.gapadventures.com (<--- we're not actually booking a tour through them but there is a forum and alot of other travellers have great information)

and of course travelblog .... good luck with your planning!!!! 😊 Reply to this
