Tell us what habits, food, entertainment, or otherwise you picked up on your journeys
I stopped wearing heels (impractical for hiking and they were killing my feet), and stopped wearing make-up from being influenced by a group of French expats whom I admired for confidently eschewing such products. This was especially funny to me because my make-up usage had previously increased while living in South Korea where most women wear make-up.
After getting into diving, I found my consumption of seafood changed as well -- opting for sustainable or drastically cutting down on it (though I have some intense sashimi cravings and love cooking salmon and mackerel).
What have you picked-up along the way?
Reply to this Like Michelle the heels got dumped and hiking boots have taken over. The biggest dietary change for me was to lose milk in my tea which I have become so accustomed to that the very thought of putting it in now is brrrrrrgggghhhhh.
Reply to this That's really funny thread I think. However, for me I don't want to say lie to anybody. And also get up from bed early morning.
Reply to this Jo,
After trekking in Nepal in 2012 I also gave up milk in tea. I was so looking forward to it when I got home and it was just hideous! I now have very weak black tea (but I sometimes still think about a strong cuppa with milk!). Re picking up a habit - Whittakers Peanut Slabs- discovered in NZ- love them to the point of having 1 a week these days (but crave them daily!).
Reply to this I've decided that the most important articles of clothes when travelling are shoes and hats. As I prefer to vacation in warm/hot destinations, I like my clothes to breath. When I can't wear sandals, I wear asics running shoes, and Merrell hiking shoes. They both have mesh ventilation and I use orthotics/inserts to ensure a high arch with tons of cushion. As I don't have tons of hair on my head, I know I need to protect it (and my face) from the sun. Personally, I hate wearing a baseball cap because they make me hot and sweaty... I recently discovered the Urban Canairie ventilator hat - This hat keeps you cool and protected from the sun. It has mesh ventilation high on the hat, so its really effective.
Reply to this The habit I have picked, since I started travelling in 2006, is the travel habit and now I think of it as a lifestyle. I stop somewhere and, if I like the place, I stay one year or more if not I leave for other destinations and that's it.
Reply to this I agree with everyone above. The shoes may be the most important item we pack. I've always been a sandals girl and continue to wear them whenever possible. A good pair of walking shoes can't be beat.
Picked up: From our perspective you can learn the most about a country by talking with the locals, eating the food and listening to the local musicians. We attempt to include local music into each trip and a cooking class when possible. At the very least we talk to the cook about the recipes.
