Hi, I just started my RTW trip a month ago. I've been in India and am then planning to go to SE asia. I've budgeted US$30 - $40/day for India, but it is possible to do it for much cheaper than that. After that, I'm going to Australia, Fiji, and then South America - I've budgeted the most for Australia - US$50 - $60, and about $40 a day in South America. Most of it was just a guess, but I'm not planning on spending more than US$20k for everything including RTW tix, travel insurance, malaria pills, equipment (e.g., good backpack and shoes). I had budgeted for 10 months, but I"m pretty confident I"ll be able to do close to 12mos on this budget. Reply to this

The Wife and I are leaving in a couple of months..... 2 months S.America, 1 Month NZ, 3Months Oz and 6 Months Asia! We'll probably have about £16k to spend after everything else is paid for (tickets, insurance, equipment)... I'm hoping this'll be more than enough, but I doubt it will! We're expecting to come back in some debt (family, credit cards etc...) but I'd rather that than miss out on something amazing! 😉 Reply to this

Thanks for this information, its all really useful. Unless i win the lottery or some other miracle happens i dont' think i'm going to have much more than £7K for my round the world trip, mind you i will be completly solo & thats what i'll have left after absoloutly everything has been paid for, ticket, jabs, insurance etc. Any other feedback from those who've travelled on a similar amount, or less & found it ok would be much appreciated. I think it really depends on the level of comfort you feel you'll be needing on the road. India is (was) extremely cheap, as are many countries in the middle east. $40/day should keep you living like a king. I budget $15/day and usually end up spending closer to $10/day. This is (obviously) staying in backpacker or cheapish haunts, eating cheap local food and taking local transportation, and in countries where hotels/hostels are cheap. It's obviously best to budget more and spend less, though. Reply to this

Hi Wendy, Me and my sister have just got back from our first round the world trip. We were in singapore, thailand and malaysia for 4 months, Australia for 2 months, New zealand for 3 months, Fiji for 2 weeks, the cooks for a week, Tahiti for a week and then America(La and las vegas) for a month. (Which is kind of similar to your trip). Altogether (flights, accomodaion, food, in country transportation, attractions, entertainment, gifts, internet....etc) cost us £2,450 each!! While we were careful we didnt deprive ourselves by any means-as you can see if you look at our blog-we did so much. We didnt do any paid work, but we did some work in australia and new zealand for food and accomodation-which was a great way to meet people and keep costs down. Also The hosts often showed us round to and you end up seeing a lot more. You only have to stay for a few days-which means you can still see alot of the country. Mountain view lodges is a good cheap place to stay in the cooks islands. Thailand is so cheap you cant really go wrong there, just make sure you learn to haggle well. Reply to this

I was very shocked too when I came back and our mum showed us the travel account (I had originally thought it would be £4000)!! (The price didnt include insurance though-that was £150 each). Our flights were £1,025. We found the kindness of strangers saved us a fair bit in all countries. (Managing to get for example free tuk-tuks in thailand, clothes in australia, to disneyland passes in LA). Also we never did any of those organised tours- we tended to just use public transport and do our own tailored tours which helped. Most places we wanted to go were feasible on our own-but I Know that is not always the case. We did lots of walking in places -for example instead of getting the gondolas(christchurch, queenstown) we would walk up the hills. (Which also helped our fitness no end). We didnt buy that much specialist equipment- just a backpack off ebay for £12- i find that this type of equipment can be quite expensive for what it is.

This pleases me very much >big smile<

I'm taking four times that amount after everything has been paid for! If I get home with a load of it spare or extend my travels (or maybe go to Japan $$$$)... It would make me a very happy man indeed! 😊 Reply to this

I was browsing this website that might be of help in the more expensive countries such as Australia and New Zealand. You do 4-6 hours work in exchange for accomodation and sometimes food.

www.helpx.net

you can browse though to see what sort of places offer it, but you have to join (its free) if you want to see the addresses and details.

Hope this helps Reply to this

My round the world trip was only 6 months long (Not including my travels of North America and Europe), but I managed to spend a lot less than some of the people who have posted on this discussion board. Plane ticket (London - Dubai- Oman- Singapore- Bangkok- Sydney- Aukland- Fiji - LA - London) was booked through Virgin Atlantic directly and cost 1080 pounds after taxes! In 6 months I only spent about 2300 pounds over the cost of flights. I spent about a month and a half in the Middle East, 2 months in southeast asia, 1 month in Australia, 1 month in NZ, 1 week in Fiji, a week in LA and then I flew back to Canada.
How well did I travel?

Accomodation- I camped for about 3 weeks in Oman which reduced the cost of accomodation. Other than that I stayed in cheap guest houses and hostels.

Food- A combination of cheap street food and my own cooking. I cooked my own food in Australia and New Zealand especially

Drink- Despite the tight budget, I tended to drink quite a lot where local custom would allow it. No bars. Lots of Cheap Southeast Asian Beer.

Travel- Dubai- local buses, relied on friends in Oman, local buses throughout Southeast Asia, Hitch hiked all of Australia, and bused around NZ.

Other notes- I always paid entrance fees to things I wanted to do and see (ie- skydiving, bungee jumping, jungle trekking, camel riding, etc.). Afterall- even on a budget, it is worth spending money to see and do certain things. I did do a few days work for a moving company in Sydney, and spent 12 days working on an Oyster Farm in Port Maquerie Australia.

Tips for tightwads- use Couchsurfer.com for free accomodation, In Australia- Always travel with a bag a Goon wine squished into your backpack, never take the tourist buses in southeast asia, camp, hitch rides where it is safe to do so, make friends and cook meals with them, try to get as clase to the source of transport before arranging local travel in asia (ie- do not book through a travel agent- go straight to the ferry, bus terminal, sketchy rocket canoe), Use soap dispensers in hostels for soap, shampoo and laundry detergent, always travel with some sort of student id (even if it is from the 80's) and use it for enterance fees/ travel tickets, Always say yes when offered short term work (it is usually a great cultural experience), always purchase a bottle of Duty free liquor after flying and store in backpack- this can be used to consume- or for currency- especially in the middle east. My wife, two kids and I went around world in 2005 for 5 months for just about exactly $50000 American. We were in mostly expensive places - you can certainly get away with cheaper if you visit less affluent countries. We spent almost a month on the west coast of NA, a month in NZ, a month in Oz, almost in month in Japan and China, and 6 weeks in Europe. Before we left I calculated we would need $40000, so I think Jack's advise is right - you'll need more than you think. If I were you I would do a detailed calculation based on gudebook prices - and then add 25%. Reply to this

Hi everyone,

After much planning and shopping around i have booked my trip with my local agent in Cambridge, UK. I tried all the usual, STA, Trailfinders and the online guys but in the end Flight Centre worked out to be the most knowledgeable and friendly but best of all they were the cheapest by miles!! They seem to have loads of offices but the Cambridge one was great. Try 01223 307 062.

Good luck everyone and happy travels!
