Not long ago we were talking with an acquaintance who has traveled to many countries but needs to go back to several of them because he was young and never got out of the bars. He stated he has been to places he has never seen.
Do you have stories to tell or confessions to make about a country that you've been to but didn't see because of drinking, illness or never leaving a resort? Tell us about it. Have you learned anything from the experience. Was it ok for that time and place or do you wish you had a do over?
Reply to this We are guilty as charged! Not of going on travels and just sitting in bars, resorts or due to illness, etc, but of time restraint. We have only travelled at most for about 5 weeks at a time but generally two weeks and then we have so much to see in those weeks or sometimes days, so it is impossible to see everything and often go back for a second visit to see parts we haven't seen. My wishlist: just to pack up and go where I feel like, without time restraints....maybe when we have retired!

When I first started traveling, I had a variant on this, trying to cram in as much as possible. I was constantly moving, always seeing things, and stuff just blurred together. I'd end my vacation utterly exhausted with little idea of what just happened.
Thankfully, the burnout forced me to slow down by necessity, and I started experiencing fewer things more deeply. I found this a much more satisfying experience. Of course, the consequence is that I needed nine months for a US road trip that many bloggers have done in three or less.

Well said-- we have had that same experience.
We are getting ready to go to Ireland for a month. Many do it in a week and we are finding we really need two more months.
Reply to this Well it's not because of drinking, but I do have a hankering to return to Rome to view the sights I missed first time round.
Way back in 1998, my brother and I were with friends in Tuscany and our van was broken into, and we lost wallets, cameras and passports. It was really frustrating! So we separated from our friends and went to Rome for a few days with little daypacks to get new passports. We were completely broke, and didn't have much in the way of clothing in our little daypacks. We walked around the outside of the Colisseum and after checking out the ticket prices joked that "it's busted anyway" so we didn't go inside. Then went to the Vatican but realised that we didn't have the appropriate clothing so couldn't go inside.
On the bright side, Rome is such a beautiful city that we were at least able to soak up the atmosphere without missing too much. However it is definitely on my list of places that I feel like I haven't done justice to at all!
Reply to this Sorry about the break in. I'm sure you will make it back.
