A good home base for a week long trip to Puerto Rico with kids?

We're taking two kids, ages 9 and 6, to Puerto Rico in February. We'll just be there a week and want to unpack only once. What is the best area to have as a home base for seeing the island? Reply to this

I would highly recommend staying in the old town of San Juan. We stayed at "Da House" which was very basic but loved it as it was in the right in the heart of it all and relatively inexpensive. The kids will love the old forts and lots of grass to run around/fly kites in an indeal setting. We only stayed in San Juan as there was enough to do there to keep us busy for 3 days.

We were there less than a year ago and my daughter's blog on Puerto Rico is

Thanks for the tip. Where should we get kites? I'll check out your daughter's blog too.

You can get the kites there at El Moro, though quality is not good, it will probalby suffice. We went to the childrens museum which was okay, but does not compare to most children museums in mainland USA, Europe, etc. Just walking the streets, checking out the forts will please both kids and the area in front of El Moro provided us with hours of fun with kites and tag. Easy on/off bus of the old city. Good food. Reply to this

An interesting day trip might be to rent a car and drive out to El Yunque National Forest. You drive up a mountain on a winding road through an incredibly thick, lush rainforest stopping frequently to read info plaques and observe gorgeous views. A warning though, when I visited it was also February, and I never made it all the way to the top because the rain, which at the higher altitudes grew so heavy that I gave up. There's still plenty to do even if it's raining up top though, and the welcome center at the base has walks and picnic areas etc. Note that even though the rain was torrential at the peak, at the base it was a nice sunny day, and most of the climb was mist or light rain.
